A solvent-free one-part hot melt polyurethane adhesive or sealant composition which is solid at room temperature comprising 10 to 70% by weight of a urethane prepolymer having an isocyanate content of 0.25 to 15% and an isocyanate index greater than 1 and 30 to 90% by weight of an ethylenically unsaturated polymer having a number average molecular weight of 4,000 to 15,000 as determined by Gel Permeation Chromatography using a PL Gel,Mixed 10 micron column, a Shimadzu Model RID 6A Detector with a tetrahydrofuran carrier solvent at a flow rate of 1 milliliter per minute, the polymer containing sufficient hydroxyl functionality to provide an OH number of 5 to 15.

Polyurethane hotmelt adhesives with reactive acrylic copolymers

Hot melt adhesive masses are provided with a tackless surface by a process which comprises the steps of: a) extruding the hot melt adhesive through an appropriate die orifice; b) spraying the surface of the extruded adhesive with a molten film forming low molecular weight polymer or formulated polymeric material, the material being selected so that it will not appreciably detract from the properties of the adhesive composition when remelted therewith; c) heating the surface of the coated adhesive at a temperature and for a period of time sufficient to re-melt the film forming polymer so as to form a continuous coating thereof yet insufficient to appreciably melt the adhesive; and d) cooling the thus coated adhesive mass to a temperature suitable for handling.

Process for coating hot melt adhesives

A carton, case or tray formed utilizing a hot melt adhesive composition said adhesive consisting essentially of a) 10 to 60% by weight of at least one ethylene n-butyl acrylate copolymer containing 25 to 45% by weight n-butyl acrylate and having a melt index of at least about 850; b) 20 to 60% of a rosin ester tackifying resin; c) 10 to 50% by weight of a microcrystalline or paraffin wax having a melting point of 150.degree. to 200.degree. F.; d) 1 to 20% by weight of a polymeric additive selected from the group consisting of ethylene vinyl acetate containing 10 to 40% by weight vinyl acetate, ethylene methyl acrylate polymers containing 10 to 28% methyl acrylate, ethylene acrylic acid copolymers having an acid number of 25 to 150, polyethylene, polypropylene, poly-(butene-1-co-ethylene), and lower melt index ethylene n-butyl acrylate copolymers; and e) 0 to 1.5% stabilizer, said adhesive characterized by a viscosity of less than 3000 cps at 135.degree. C., fiber tearing bonds from within the range of -35.degree. to 40.degree. C.

Cool-applied hot melt adhesive composition

A specific class of water-borne, water redispersible laminating adhesives is disclosed which is desirable for bonding nonwoven substrates to themselves or to other substrates. The adhesives provide improved bond strength and improved water redispersibility when compared to laminating adhesives currently used for the same purpose. Furthermore, the novel adhesives are much less sensitive to the presence of significant levels of plasticizer than are laminating adhesives currently used, which exhibit reduced water redispersibility when such plasticizers are present in significant amounts. The novel laminating adhesives contain an aqueous styrene/acrylic polymer dispersion prepared by radical-initiated emulsion polymerization of unsaturated monomers in the presence of starch degradation products having a weight average molecular weight range of from about 2500 to 25000 and which are obtainable by hydrolysis in the aqueous phase. The adhesives may contain only the starch-modified, styrene/acrylic polymer dispersion, or may further include other components, such as plasticizers and/or rheology modifiers, when required. The novel adhesives are particularly useful in disposable articles wherein a nonwoven substrate is bonded to a second substrate via a water-borne, laminating adhesive. The disposable articles may include an absorbent core portion disposed between and proximate the nonwoven and second substrate.

Water-borne, water redispersible, laminating adhesives for nonwoven

Hot melt adhesive compositions consisting essentially of: a) 15 to 45% by weight of at least one ethylene n-butyl acrylate copolymer containing 15 to 40% by weight n-butyl acrylate and having a melt index of at least 600; b) 25 to 55% of a terpene phenolic tackifying resin or a hydrogenated derivative thereof, the resin having a Ring and Ball softening point less than 125.degree. C.; c) 15 to 40% by weight of a low melting point synthetic Fischer-Tropsch wax; and d) 0 to 1.5% stabilizer. The adhesives are characterized by an excellent balance of high and low temperature performance without sacrifice to machinability or thermal stability.

Low application temperature hot melt adhesive

The use of C.sub.1 -C.sub.5 alkyl butyrates, d-limonene, ethylene glycol monobutyl ether and C.sub.5 -C.sub.20 petroleum distillates and normal paraffins in place of methyl chloroform (1,1,1-trichloroethane) in conventional waterborne packaging and converting adhesives provides comparable or better adhesive products with reduced environmental and health related problems.

Use of low toxicity solvents in waterborne adhesives

A non-blocking hot melt adhesive mass is prepared by (a) lining a rigid mold with a plastic film, said film being meltable together with the adhesive composition and blendable into said molten adhesive composition, and said mold being a heat sink or being in contact with a heat sink; (b) pouring molten hot melt adhesive into the lined mold; and (c) allowing the molten hot melt adhesive to solidify.

Method for packaging hot melt adhesives

Hot melt packaging adhesive compositions consisting essentially of 20 to 50% by weight of an ethylene n-butyl acrylate copolymer containing 25-45% by weight, preferably 30 to 40% n-butyl acrylate and having a melt index of at least 10; 30 to 60% of an aliphatic or cycloaliphatic hydrocarbon resin or hydrogenated derivative thereof or a hydrogenated aromatic hydrocarbon resin; and 10 to 30% by weight of a high melting synthetic wax provide adhesives characterized by an excellent balance of high and low temperature performance without sacrifice to machinability or thermal stability. Further, the adhesive is characterized by a low density and consequently is readily filterable in recycling systems.

Hot melt adhesive

Hot melt adhesive compositions are prepared from 20 to 98% by weight of a polylactide homo- or copolymer containing at least 20 molar percent of the lactide component; 2 to 80% by weight of a polar tackifier having a Ring and Ball softening point (as described by ASTM E-26) greater than about 60.degree. C.; 0 to 50% by weight of a plasticizer; 0 to 30% by weight of a wax diluent; 0-3% by weight of a stabilizer; and 0-20% of starch. By utilizing a naturally occurring, thermoplastic, biodegradable copolymer as the base polymer, these adhesives advance the state of the art of hot melt adhesives by alleviating the dependence on petroleum based materials and by allowing for the development of hot melt adhesives which either degrade naturally after coming in contact with the soil or which can be composted.

Polylactide and starch containing hot melt adhesive

Hot melt adhesives having suitable open time and crystallinity properties making them especially useful as temporary adhesives are provided by a composition comprising a combination of 5 to 50% by weight of an isotactic thermoplastic polybutylene copolymer or a low density ethylene polymer with 3 to 65% by weight of a solid benzoate plasticizer.

Hot melt adhesives useful in temporary bonding operations

Hot melt adhesive compositions are prepared from 20 to 98% by weight of a polylactide homo- or copolymer containing at least 20 molar percent of the lactide component; 2 to 80% by weight of a polar tackifier having a Ring and Ball softening point (as described by ASTM E-26) greater than about 60.degree. C.; 0 to 50% by weight of a plasticizer; 0 to 30% by weight of a wax diluent; 0-3% by weight of a stabilizer; and 0-20% of a polymer. By utilizing a naturally occurring, thermoplastic, biodegradable copolymer as the base polymer, these adhesives advance the state of the art of hot melt adhesives by alleviating the dependence on petroleum based materials and by allowing for the development of hot melt adhesives which either degrade naturally after coming in contact with the soil or which can be composted.

Polylactide containing hot melt adhesive

Nonwoven assemblies bonded with water dispersible or sensitive hot melt adhesives comprising 50-100 parts of a graft copolymer of about 40-85% of at least one vinyl monomer and about 15-60% of at least one water soluble polyalkylene oxide polymer, and about 0-50 parts by weight of tackifying resin. The compositions may also be employed as water sensitive binders in the manufacture of the nonwoven. Vinyl acetate is the preferred vinyl monomer whereas ethylene oxide homo- or copolymers are the preferred polyalkylene oxide. The use of tackifying resin is optional and may be undesirable for many of the applications.

Water sensitive hot melt adhesives for nonwoven applications

A tackless hot melt adhesive package is provided by using a hydrogenated castor oil coating material and a low pressure, melt blow application technique.

Non-tacky hot melt adhesive containing package

Hot melt adhesive compositions are prepared from 20 to 90% by weight of a linear polyester of 3-hydroxybutyric and 3-hydroxyvaleric acids containing 9 to 35% of the hydroxyvalerate component; 10 to 80% by weight of a polar tackifier having a Ring and Ball softening (as described by ASTM E-26) greater than about 60.degree. C.; 0 to 50% by weight of a plasticizer; 0 to 30% by weight of a wax diluent and 0-3% by weight of a stabilizer; 0-20% of a compatible polymer. By utilizing a naturally occurring, thermoplastic, biodegradable copolymer as the base polymer, these adhesives advance the state of the art of hot melt adhesives by alleviating the dependence on petroleum based materials and by allowing for the development of hot melt adhesives which either degrade naturally after coming in contact with the soil or which can be composted.
