A controlled free-radical polymerization process for forming end-functionalized polymers is disclosed, particularly by degenerative iodine transfer. The end-functionalized polymers are characterized by a polydispersity less than 2.5 and a predetermined molecular weight. The end-functionalized polymers are useful as reactive intermediates in condensation polymerization, chain polymerization and heterogeneous polymerization reactions.

A polymerization process for the preparation of (meth)acrylate containing homopolymers or block copolymers comprises heating a mixture of a free radical initiator, a stable free radical agent, and a polymerizable monomer compound to form a thermoplastic resin or resins with a narrow polydispersity. The stable free radical agent is a piperazinone or morpholone based nitroxide or any adducts thereof.

One-step sealant compositions are provided which have a moisture-activated curative component and an aliphatic isocyanate-terminated polyol component blocked with a phenol substituted with an electron-withdrawing group having a Hammett .sigma..sub.p constant in the range from &gt;0.24 to about 0.73. In this range, the blocking phenol is rapidly displaced by an amine group so that the sealant cures in less than one-half the time required for an analogous sealant in which end-capping is performed with an aromatic polyisocyanate. Yet the novel sealant is also stable for more than twice as long, in excess of nine months, when sealed under nitrogen in a container and stored at 25.degree. C. and 50% relative humidity. Sealants of this invention thus provide both, a desirable fast cure rate of less than 8 hr to cures to a viscosity of 100,000 cp in a 50% relative humidity atmosphere at 25.degree. C., and exceptional stability when stored. Such sealants are particularly desirable because the improvement in rate of cure and in shelf life is relatively insensitive to the specific aliphatic polyisocyanate or the polyester or polyether polyol used.

A continuous process for making N,N-dimethylacrylamide (NNDMA) is disclosed which uses a commodity chemical, namely vinyl chloride (VCl), which is amidated with dimethylamine (DMA) and carbon monoxide in the presence of a supported palladium(O) triorganophosphine catalyst used under conditions where the ratio of P/Pd is critical. The continous process unexpectedly provides the catalyst with long life because the reaction can be carried out in a moving bed of catalyst in the presence of enough acetonitrile solvent to prevent deposition of DMA.HCl, formed during the reaction, in the pores of the catalyst support.

Polyarylene polyethers ('PAPE') with vinyl chain ends may be crosslinked to form networks with excellent physical and chemical properties except they tend to be brittle. In particular, a polysulfone ('PSU' made from bisphenol A and dichlorodiphenyl sulfone) with vinylbenzyl chain ends ('di-VB-PSU') is too brittle for many applications where impact resistance is essential. This brittleness is combatted by inserting a thermally stable rubbery poly(dimethylsiloxane) ('PDMS') segment having a number average molecular weight in the range from about 600 to about 5000 connected to di-VB-PSU segments by hydrosilylation in the presence of a Pt catalyst, to form a thermoplastic linear predominantly triblock oligomer with vinylbenzyl chain ends which are thermally crosslinkable. When crosslinked, the network formed has improved impact resistance and toughness, with only a little loss in the upper glass transition temperature if the relative lengths of the PDMS and PAPE are such as to provide the desired degree of phase microincompatibility sufficient to improve toughness. The triblock may be blended with a polymer with which the triblock may be crosslinked upon curing. If the VB-PSU-PDMS-PSU-VB triblock is blended with di-VB-PSU the polyblend may be crosslinked to provide improved toughness.

An alkane is reacted with oxygen and available chlorine in the presence of a solid solution catalyst containing iron cations to yield unsaturated hydrocarbons and chlorinated saturated and unsaturated hydrocarbons. In a preferred embodiment of the process, ethane is reacted with oxygen and available chlorine in the presence of a solid solution catalyst containing iron cations to yield vinyl chloride, ethylene, and other valuable by-products. The conversion of ethane to products approaches 100 percent, vinyl chloride is prepared in up to 40 mole percent yield, and the combined yield of vinyl chloride, ethylene dichloride, ethyl chloride, and ethylene is up to 90 mole percent.
