The invention relates to a method for the preparation of micro- or nano crystalline cellulosic compositions from virgin cellulose containing amorphous and crystalline cellulose phases comprising the following steps: (A) contacting virgin cellulose with a first solvent, characterized in that the first solvent is an aqueous solution comprising 40-65 wt. % ZnClin water, relative to the total weight of the of ZnCland water, (B) dissolving the amorphous cellulosic phase, whereby the amorphous cellulosic phase is preferentially dissolved over the crystalline cellulosic phase, (C) separating the dissolved amorphous cellulose from the crystalline cellulose and preferably step C wherein the obtained micro- or nanocellulose has XRD type I structure, which then can be contacted with a second solvent comprising between 65 and 90 wt. % ZnClin water to produce delaminated cellulose having XRD type II structure. The invention also relates to micro- or nano crystalline cellulose having an XRD type I structure and nano crystalline cellulose having an XRD type II structure or mixtures thereof of high crystallinity and purity and the uses thereof.

Method for the preparation of micro or nano crystalline cellulose

The invention relates to a process for the preparation of homogeneous hybrid inorganic-organic materials comprising dissolving and/or suspending and/or dispersing an inorganic and an organic material in a ionic liquid solvent to form an ionic solution and precipitating the inorganic and organic materials together to form a hybrid inorganic-organic precipitate material. The invention further relates to the homogeneous hybrid inorganic-organic precipitate material obtainable or obtained by the process, in particular carbon alumina hybrid material, to shaped articles like fibers and particles comprising said hybrid material and the use thereof for the manufacture of—or as a component in—catalysts, sorbents, building and construction materials, packaging materials, paper materials, coatings and polymers.

Process for the preparation of homogeneous hybrid materials

A process is disclosed for converting cellulose to nanocellulose. The process comprises dissolving a cellulose feedstock in an inorganic molten salt solvent medium. The solvent medium is substantially proton free. The solvent medium may contain a proton scavenger. The process is carried out at relatively low temperatures, and requires little input of mechanical energy.

Method for preparation of novel modified bio based materials

The invention relates to a process to convert hydrocarbons into hydrogen and a separate carbon phase, whereby in step a) the hydrocarbons are contacted with a molten salt, preferably comprising Zinc Chloride, at temperatures preferably above 500&#xb0; C. and in step b) a solid or liquid carbon phase is separated from the molten salt at a lower temperature, preferably below 150&#xb0; C. The molten salt is then preferably re-heated to the desired temperature and recycled to step a). The process avoids the emission of CO, making the hydrogen produced in this way a zero COemission fuel and which also produces a carbon product produced having a use value.

Process for the production of hydrogen

A process is disclosed for reversibly absorbing carbon dioxide to an alkali metal or earth alkaline absorbent. For absorption the absorbent is contacted with a first gas composition. For desorption the absorbent is contacted with a second gas composition. The moisture contents of the first and second gas compositions are controlled so that during the absorption step the absorbent is converted to a bicarbonate, and during the desorption step the absorbent is converted to a carbonate hydrate. Compared to prior art processes the process of the invention requires less energy input. The process of the invention is particularly suitable for producing a carbon dioxide enriched gas for accelerating plant growth in a greenhouse.

Moisture swing carbon dioxide enrichment process

A process is disclosed for converting a particulate solid biomass material to a high quality bio-oil in high yield. The process comprises a pretreatment step and a pyrolysis step. The pretreatment comprises a step of at least partially demineralizing the solid biomass, and improving the accessibility of the solid biomass by opening the texture of the particles of the solid biomass. In a preferred embodiment the liquid pyrolysis product is separated into the bio-oil and an aqueous phase, and the aqueous phase is used as a solvent in the demineralization step and/or in the step of improving the accessibility of the solid biomass by opening the texture of the particles of the solid biomass.

Process for producing high quality bio-oil in high yield

A process is shown for reducing the alcohol content and/or the sugar content of a beverage. The process includes wetting a predetermined amount of a particulate solid material with a predetermined amount of water, and contacting the beverage with the pre-wetted solid adsorbent material. The material selectively adsorbs alcohol, sugar, or alcohol and sugar from the beverage. The process can be carried out at a small scale and does not require any sophisticated equipment.

Process for reducing the alcohol and/or sugar content of a beverage

An energy integrated process is disclosed for the conversion of carbon dioxide to a liquid product. The conversion reaction is exothermic. The heat of reaction and the heat of condensation of the reaction product or products are used as energy input in a carbon dioxide enrichment step. The enrichment step produces a feed gas for the conversion reaction.

Preparing solid biomass particles for catalytic conversion includes agitating solid biomass particles and providing a biomass-catalyst mixture to a conventional petroleum refinery process unit. The biomass-catalyst mixture includes the solid biomass particles and a catalyst. Agitating solid biomass particles includes flowing a gas to provide a velocity to at least a portion of the solid biomass particles sufficient to reduce their sizes. Co-processing a biomass feedstock and a conventional petroleum feedstock includes liquefying at least a portion of a biomass-catalyst mixture and co-processing at least a portion of the liquefied biomass feedstock and a conventional petroleum feedstock in a conventional petroleum refinery process unit. The biomass feedstock includes a plurality of solid biomass particles and a catalyst, which is liquefied to produce a liquefied biomass feedstock.

Co-processing solid biomass in a conventional petroleum refining process unit

A process for preparing a catalyst is disclosed. The process generally comprises the steps of: (a) preparing a slurry comprising clay, zeolite, a sodium-free silica source, quasi-crystalline boehmite, and micro-crystalline boehmite, provided that the slurry does not comprise peptized quasi-crystalline boehmite; (b) adding a monovalent acid to the slurry; (c) adjusting the pH of the slurry to a value above about 3, and (d) shaping the slurry to form particles. This process results in attrition resistant catalysts with a good accessibility.

Catalyst/biomass mixing in transport reactor

A process is disclosed for converting biomass to fuels and/or valuable chemicals. The process comprises the steps of a) activating biomass to make it more susceptible to conversion; c) partially converting the biomass to a solubilized material; and d) subjecting the unconverted biomass to a second conversion step. The process optionally comprises a step b) of adding a solvent to the activated biomass. In a preferred embodiment the solubilized biomass obtained in step c) is removed before the unconverted biomass is subjected to step d).

Process for the conversion of biomass to liquid fuels and specialty chemicals

A process for pretreating a solid, cellulose-containing biomass material which pretreatment comprises contacting the solid biomass material with an Ionic Liquid medium under sub-solvating conditions. The pretreatment results in an opening up of the texture of the solid biomass material, while no or a limited amount of biomass material is dissolved. The Ionic Liquid medium preferably is an inorganic molten salt hydrate. The pretreated biomass material can be as a feedstock in any process that benefits from the change in texture resulting from the pretreatment.
