A circuit for controlling a fail-safe operation of measurement and control apparatus for detecting the presence or absence of water by making a measurement of the impedance experienced in a gap between an insulated tip of the electrode and a surface held at a reference voltage or else connected to ground. The apparatus may be configured to provide an alarm when water is present and should not be, or vice versa. The circuit comprises comparators IC1 and IC2, a phase detector IC3 and a triple-redundant drive circuit 12 which drives a relay 14. The function of IC1 is to ensure that when operating with water as the normal condition, an electrode fault, such as could be caused by excessive contamination, will cause the system output to indicate an abnormal condition. The main function of IC2 is to discriminate between the water condition and the steam condition. The function of IC3 is to ensure that there is no output if there exists an abnormal condition or any fault condition. It follows that there will only be an output if the sensor is in the normal condition. This is then shown to operate a relay using a secure triple redundancy drive circuit so that the relay contacts may be used to indicate a normal or an abnormal/fault condition.

Fail-safe system

A fluid level sensing system, particularly for sensing the water level in a steam generating boiler, comprises a vessel connected to the boiler so as to contain water and steam at substantially the same level as in the boiler, a number of vertically spaced electrodes projecting into the vessel, and circuitry for measuring the electrical impedance sensed by each electrode. The circuitry, which can be multiplexed to each electrode in turn, includes a first comparator for producing an output when the sensed impedance lies between the normal maximum impedance of the water and the normal minimum impedance of the steam above the water, this output being demultiplexed to drive a vertical display to show the level of the steam/water interface. The circuitry additionally includes a second comparator for producing a further output when the sensed impedance lies below the normal minimum impedance of the water, which further output is indicative of a variety of different fault conditions and drives a fault indicator.

Fluid level sensing systems

A boiler water level system comprises a plurality of electrodes arranged to sense the resistivity of the fluid at each of a plurality of different levels in a pressure vessel. The pressure vessel is coupled to one end of the boiler such that the level of the water in the pressure vessel is substantially the same as the level in the boiler, and each electrode senses the resistivity of the fluid (ie water or steam) between the tip of the electrode and the wall of the pressure vessel. Such a system on its own inherently produces a digital output of relatively low resolution, so to improve resolution, and to provide an analogue output if desired, additional circuitry is provided to sense the progressive change in the impedance sensed by each electrode as the water rises to progressively immerse that electrode and then carries on rising towards the next electrode.

A distributed temperature sensor comprises an elongate ultrasonic waveguide having a number of zones along its length, each zone having a grating formed on it. This is typically achieved by incorporating uniformly spaced notches or bands (or collars) throughout the zone. The grating spacing in each zone is different, so that each grating reflects a characteristic frequency. This frequency varies as the temperature of the zone varies, so if wide-band ultrasonic pulses are launched into the waveguide, the temperature of each zone can be determined from the reflected frequencies.

Distributed temperature sensor

A water level measurement system for use with a pressurized power plant boiler comprises a tubular pressure vessel for attachment to one end of the boiler such that the water level in the pressure vessel is the same as in the boiler. The pressure vessel has a central rod-like conductor which together with the vessel forms a coaxial RF waveguide. A pair of spaced reference discontinuities are provided in the conductor above the maximum level of the water, so that an RF pulse injected into the waveguide is reflected successively by both discontinuities and the surface of the water. The level of the water can then be determined independently of changes in the dielectric constant of the vapor above it, from the ratio between the time intervals between the first and second reflected pulses and between the first and third reflected pulses. The conductor is mounted at the top of the pressure vessel by way of a pressure seal and a ceramic insulator.
