Seismic data processing methods and computing systems are presented. In one embodiment, a method is disclosed that includes simulating a set of simulated seismic data from a set of acquired seismic data; separating the simulated seismic data into a plurality of data sets, wherein one set of data is matched in the acquired seismic data and one set of data is unmatched in the acquired seismic data; conforming the simulated seismic data and the acquired seismic data to one another using separated, simulated seismic data unmatched by a counterpart in the acquired seismic data from the acquired seismic data; and performing an inversion between the acquired seismic data and the separated, simulated seismic data after they are conformed to one another.

A method for processing seismic data. The method includes predicting seismic data according to an earth model representing seismic properties of subterranean formations in the earth, determining a difference between seismic data acquired from one or more seismic receivers and the predicted seismic data, projecting the difference into a model space in traveltime, and updating the earth model according to the projected difference. As a result, the updated earth model more accurately represents the seismic properties of subterranean formations in the earth.

A source wavefield is computed from encoded source data calculated by performing encoding of source wavelets with noise. A receiver wavefield is computed from encoded receiver data calculated by encoding of measured receiver data with the noise. An output representing a target structure is determined based on the source wavefield and the receiver wavefield.

To perform inversion to produce a model of a structure, a filtering operator based at least on an angle between a propagating direction of a source wavefield and a propagating direction of a back-propagated receiver wavefield is computed. The filtering operator is used in performing the inversion to produce the model of the structure.

The present invention provides a method, a system and a program storage device containing instructions for simulating the flow of fluid in a physical system using a composition-based extensible object-oriented program. A computer program includes: (i) a framework subsystem providing a graph package, a compute package and a property package; (ii) an engine subsystem including engine subsystem packages for performing numerical simulation, the engine subsystem packages including a linear solver package and a non-linear solver package; and (iii) a set of model components providing physical and numerical modeling behaviors utilized by the engine subsystem, the model components including at least one of a reservoir model, a well model, an aquifer model, a fluid model and a SCAL model. The framework subsystem, the engine subsystem and the model components work with one other to simulate the flow of fluid. Preferably, a partition package is used to create a partition of subsets of node and edge indices which can be used optimize computations by the program.
