A terminal system having a terminal ground plate portion with a hump projecting therefrom is adapted to terminate an inner metallic shield of a high speed cable, the cable having an outer jacket and the inner metallic shield with a portion of the outer jacket removed to expose a portion of the metallic shield. The hump has a slot for receiving the cable at a location along the cable in registry with the exposed metallic shield thereof. With the metallic shield maintained in the slot, a solder connection is established between the metallic shield and the ground plate portion at the hump.

System for terminating the shield of a high speed cable

A terminal is disclosed for terminating the shield of a high speed cable having an outer jacket and an inner metallic shield with a portion of the outer jacket removed to expose a portion of the metallic shield. The terminal includes a ground plate portion. A loop projects from the ground plate portion for receiving the high speed cable at a location along the cable in registry with the exposed metallic shield thereof. A solder connection is established between the metallic shield and the loop.

The retention system is provided for a threaded member (14, 54) and an electrical connector (10) which includes a sheet metal shield (46) juxtaposed on a dielectric housing (32). A threaded hole (58) is provided in the shield (46) for 4 threadingly receiving the threaded member (14, 54). A hole (64) is provided in the dielectric housing (32) behind the threaded hole (58) in the shield (46) for threadingly receiving the threaded member (14, 54) after the shank 54 of the threaded member (14, 54) passes through the threaded hole (58) in the shield (46). During assembly, the threaded members (14, 15) self thread into interfering portions of the housing (32) defined by the housing holes (64) to thereby increase the resistance of threading in order to prevent stripping of the threaded holes (58) in the shield (46).

Retention system for electrical connectors

A grounding bridge for terminating the ground portions of an interconnect cable includes a conductive metal member having two leg portions extending at angles to each other. One leg portion is folded upon itself to define a partial enclosure which receives an internal coaxial cable of the interconnect cable therein along with a jumper wire while the other leg portion is offset from the one leg portion to lie flat against the metal shielding of the interconnect cable.

Grounding bridge for shielded interconnect cables and interconnect

A terminating connector for a data transmission cable, wherein the cable is of a known characteristic impedance and is of the type having a signal carrying conductor and a shield. The connector is typically arranged to mate with a complementary connector of a backplane. An overmolded subassembly of the connector includes a first terminal electrically coupled at one end thereof to the shield, and a second terminal electrically coupled at one end thereof to the signal carrying conductor. A dielectric insert is disposed between the first and second terminals. The insert is dimensioned and has a dielectric constant such that the characteristic impedance of the subassembly substantially matches the characteristic impedance of the cable. The subassembly may be secured to a surrounding housing.

A terminal is disclosed for terminating the shields of a plurality of high speed cables each having an outer jacket and an inner metallic shield with a portion of the outer jacket removed to expose a portion of the metallic shield. The terminal includes a conductive ground plate portion. A gripping arm projects from the ground plate portion for embracing all of the plurality of high speed cables in direct engagement with the exposed portions of the metallic shields thereat. A solder connection is disposed between the gripping arm and the metallic shields.

A system is disclosed for terminating the shield of a high speed cable having an outer jacket and an inner metallic shield with a. portion of the outer jacket removed to expose a portion of the metallic shield. The system includes a conductive two-part. terminating member including a cable receiving part and a terminal part. The cable receiving part includes a receptacle for receiving the high speed cable in direct engagement with the exposed metallic shield thereof. A solder connection is applied between the exposed metallic shield and the cable receiving part at the receptacle. The terminal part is adapted for grounding the metallic shield. The cable receiving part is mounted on the terminal part in conductivity therewith.

A terminating connector for a data transmission cable, wherein the cable is of a known characteristic impedance and is of the type having a signal carrying conductor and a shield. The connector is typically arranged to mate with a complementary connector of a backplane. An overmolded subassembly of the connector includes a first terminal electrically coupled at one end thereof to the shield, and a second terminal electrically coupled at one end thereof to the signal carrying conductor. A dielectric insert is disposed between the first and second terminals. The insert is dimensioned and has a dielectric constant such that the characteristic impedance of the subassembly substantially matches the characteristic impedance of the cable. The subassembly also includes a latch mechanism for latching to a surrounding housing.

A method is disclosed for terminating the metallic shield of a high speed cable which includes an inner dielectric inside the metallic shield, as well as a system for effecting the method. At least a portion of the outer jacket of the cable is removed to expose a portion of the metallic shield. An insulating member is positioned between the metallic shield and the inner dielectric of the cable. The cable then is positioned on a conductive terminating member having a portion in registry with the exposed portion of the metallic shield outside the insulating member. The metallic shield is soldered to the portion of the terminating member, as the insulating member protects the inner dielectric from the heat of the soldering step.

A method is disclosed for terminating the metallic shield of a high speed cable, and including a terminating member used with the method. At least a portion of the outer jacket of the high speed cable is removed to expose a portion of the metallic shield of the cable. The cable is positioned on a conductive terminating member having an opening in registry with the exposed portion of the metallic shield. The shield is soldered to the terminating member through the opening.

A system is disclosed for terminating the metallic shields of a pair of high speed cables each having a portion of the outer jacket removed to expose a portion of the metallic shield thereof. A rigid sleeve is positioned between the metallic shield and the dielectric of each of the cables. An elongated, generally planar ground plate has a pair of crimp arms projecting inwardly from opposite edges of the plate near one end thereof for crimping onto the exposed portions of the metallic shields of the pair of cables. The crimp arms clamp the shields between the arms and the rigid sleeves and position the pair of cables on the ground plate between the arms.

An electrical connector includes a dielectric housing having a conductor-receiving groove defined at least in part by a pair of side walls between which an elongated insulated conductor is receivable essentially normally of its length. An electrical contact has an insulation displacement termination section disposed in the groove. A pair of inwardly-directed wings are provided in the groove and spaced from and facing one another to provide a slot therebetween. The conductor is movable through the slot past free ends of the wings into insulation-displacement termination with the termination section of the contact. A pair of retention ribs face inwardly of the side walls of the groove essentially below the wings for embracing and thereby retaining the conductor terminated by the contact.

Electrical connector with improved conductor retention means

A panel mount system includes an electrical connector for mounting in an aperture in a panel. The connector has a mounting flange for interfacing with the panel, and a pair of cantilevered latch structures. Each latch structure includes a base arm projecting from the mounting flange and one locking arm deflectably cantilevered at one side of the base arm from an end thereof remote from the mounting flange. The locking arm extends angularly from the end of the base arm and from the one side thereof back towards the mounting flange. The other side of the base arm opposite the locking arm is substantially rigid. The maximum cross-sectional dimensions of one of the latch structures and its adjacent portion of the mounting aperture is different from the maximum cross-sectional dimensions of the other latch structure and its adjacent portion of the mounting aperture to provide polarization for the connector relative to the panel. The cross-sectional dimensions of the base arm adjacent the mounting flange is less than the adjacent portion of the mounting aperture to provide floating of the connector within the aperture relative to the panel.

Polarizing and/or floating panel mount for electrical connectors

A system is provided for producing a shielded connector assembly for connecting a round multiconductor cable to a complementary connector having a flat array of terminals. The cable includes a plurality of insulated conductors within a cable shield and surrounded by an outer insulating jacket which is stripped to expose the cable shield and the insulated conductors. An insulating housing has a receptacle for receiving the insulated conductors in a flat array. A plurality of terminals are provided for termination to the received conductors and for mating with the terminals of the complementary connector. A conductive connector shield is mounted on and about a portion of the insulating housing, with a portion of the shield extending into the receptacle. A round conductive crimp ferrule is positioned over the round multiconductor cable in engagement with the exposed cable shield and with the exposed insulated conductors projecting from an end of the crimp ferrule. The exposed insulated conductors are sorted and positioned in a flat array. The round conductive crimp ferrule is crimped into a generally flat configuration onto the cable for holding the conductors in their flat array within the receptacle of the housing for termination to the terminals, and with the crimped ferrule in engagement with the shield portion in the receptacle.
