A three-dimensional Bragg grating may include a single colloidal crystal that includes a plurality of repeated layers of material having different refractive indexes. A sample cell for producing a volume Bragg grating may include an internal shape that forms at least one capillary cell having a flat surface and rounded edges. A method of producing a three-dimensional Bragg grating may include: suspending insoluble particles in a host fluid to form a suspension; and exposing the suspension to a sustained microgravity environment.

Method and apparatus for fabrication of large three-dimensional single colloidal crystals for bragg diffraction of infrared light

This invention relates generally to the field of quasicrystalline strictures. In preferred embodiments, the stopgap structure is more spherically symmetric than periodic structures facilitating the formation of stopgaps in nearly all directions because of higher rotational symmetries. More particularly, the invention relates to the use of quasicrystalline structures for optical, mechanical, electrical and magnetic purposes. In some embodiments, the invention relates to manipulating, controlling, modulating and directing waves including electromagnetic, sound, spin, and surface waves, for pre-selected range of wavelengths propagating in multiple directions.

Quasicrystalline structures and uses thereof

Methods and systems for nondestructive material inspection

A system for controlling the ion content of a colloidal system. A porous deionizer is used to selectively remove and isolate ions from a colloidal system. The colloidal particles within the system have their attraction/repulsion tuned by control of the ion content to alter the interaction between the colloidal particles.

Capacitive control of colloidal self-assembly

The present invention provides a method for self-replication of multimers of nucleic acid origami tiles by exponentially amplifying the multimer from initial seeds of monomeric units of nucleic acid origami tiles and also provides for the selective exponential amplification of a designated multimer, such as with specific properties or characteristics, over one or more competing multimers in the presence of a mixture of monomers for each of the possible multimers. The selection of the designated multimer based on an environmental change allows the designated multimer to outgrow all competing multimers.

Specificity, flexibility and valence of DNA bonds for guided emulsion architecture

A self-assembling structure using non-equilibrium driving forces leading to 'living crystals' and other maniputable particles with a complex dynamics. The dynamic self-assembly assembly results from a competition between self-propulsion of particles and an attractive interaction between the particles. As a result of non-equilibrium driving forces, the crystals form, grow, collide, anneal, repair themselves and spontaneously self-destruct, thereby enabling reconfiguration and assembly to achieve a desired property.

Method and system using microscopic building blocks for driving 3D self-assembly

A method and system for assembling building blocks of colloidal particles and also for shaping of colloids for self-assembly for manufacturing, processing and formation of compositions of matter. A first type of particle is selected as a 'key' particle constructed to mate with a 'lock' particle, the binding arising from depletion forces. A variety of shapes can be used to carry out this method and system to create compositions of matter. Colloids can be shaped by controlled deformation of multiphase colloid particles.

DNA photolithography with cinnamate crosslinkers

The invention provides micron and sub-micron scale particles designed to recognize and selectively interact with each other by exploiting the recognition and specificity enabled by DNA-sequence-encoded coatings. Such materials possess sufficient information coded in their chemical and physical interactions to self assemble and self replicate. The invention further provides methods of using such materials to create self replicating and organizing materials. Replicated copies are permanently linked and then thermally detached, freeing them to act as templates for further growth. This new class of condensed matter systems, provides means to design and control the structure and function of materials and machines from the microscopic to life-size. In another aspect of the invention, depletion type forces and depletion zones can be utilized in the implementation of the self assembly and self replication of materials, including without limitation colloidal particles. The invention further provides novel means of synthesis and materials built by such synthesis, which may be used in a variety of applications, including microelectronics.
