A fire-resistant collapsible enclosure can include three or more sidewalls coupled with a cross plate internal to the enclosure. A top portion of the enclosure can include a non-linear edge configured to be an airflow outlet, or a bottom portion of the enclosure can include a non-linear edge configured to be an airflow outlet. The fire-resistant collapsible enclosure can be configured for use as an oven, a stove, or a smoker. In an example, two or more of the fire-resistant collapsible enclosures can be used together, such as where one enclosure is configured as a heat source and a second enclosure is configured as a smoker. In an example, the cross plate can include a throttle to control airflow through the enclosure.

An electrochemical device subassembly is provided that includes a membrane electrode assembly and a gasket. The membrane electrode assembly includes an electrolyte membrane having a first major surface, a second major surface opposite the first major surface, and a peripheral edge. The present invention provides a method of making a gasketed fuel cell membrane electrode assembly by simultaneously binding together the parts of the MEA, impregnating uncured elastomeric gasket material into the outer edge portions of each fluid transport layer, and substantially curing the uncured elastomeric gasket material so as to form anode-side and cathode-side gaskets. In order to form a raised-ridge microstructured contact pattern on the contact face of each gasket, patterning plates bearing a negative relief of a raised-ridge microstructured contact pattern may be positioned between the press platens and the uncured elastomeric gasket material.

Fuel cell membrane electrode assembly with sealing surfaces

A registration arrangement for a fuel cell stack assembly incorporates registration posts and registration apertures or recesses. Fuel cell assemblies of the stack may include first and second flow field plates and a membrane electrode assembly (MEA) having an active area. Registration apertures are defined in each of the MEA and the first and second flow field plates. The respective registration apertures are situated within non-active areas of the MEA when the first and second flow field plates and the MEA are in axial alignment. Registration posts are configured for reception within the registration apertures. Each of the registration posts has an outer surface differing in shape from a shape of the inner surface of the registration apertures. The inner surface of the registration apertures contact the outer surface of the registration posts at a plurality of discrete press-fit locations.

Registration arrangement for fuel cell assemblies

The present invention provides a gasketed fuel cell membrane electrode assembly comprising: a polymer electrolyte membrane; layers of anode and cathode catalyst; anode-side and cathode-side fluid transport layer; and anode-side and cathode-side gaskets; where the gaskets comprise an elastomeric gasket material which is impregnated into the outer edge portions of the respective fluid transport layer; and where at least a portion of the contact face of each gasket bears a raised-ridge microstructured contact pattern. The gasketed fuel cell membrane electrode assembly according to the present invention may additionally comprise a rigid, non-elastomeric anode-side and cathode-side shims positioned between at least a portion of the gasket and the polymer electrolyte membrane. The raised-ridge microstructured contact pattern preferably comprises ridges which meet at joining points, wherein no more than three ridges meet at any one joining point. Such raised-ridge microstructured contact patterns may be hexagonal patterns or degenerate hexagonal patterns. In another aspect, the present invention provides a method of making a gasketed fuel cell membrane electrode assembly by simultaneously binding together the parts of the MEA, impregnating uncured elastomeric gasket material into the outer edge portions of each fluid transport layer, and substantially curing the uncured elastomeric gasket material so as to form anode-side and cathode-side gaskets.
