Dynamic performance and resource management in a processing system

A content distribution system may distribute content to a plurality of receivers on demand. When it is determined that two different receivers are receiving the same program but one receiver requested the information prior to the other, bandwidth may be conserved by increasing the rate of data flow to one user and decreasing the rate of data flow to another user, in one embodiment, until such time as both users are receiving the same portion of the program at the same time. In such case, the program may be simultaneously distributed to two users on the same channel, conserving bandwidth.

Reducing the time difference between programs being transmitted to two different receivers

A call routing function may receive information from a user profile about how to handle a telephone call. In addition, the call routing function may also receive information about what the user is currently involved in doing. This information may be derived from the user's software-based calendar. Using both sources of information, a call may automatically be appropriately routed by the call routing function.

A communications system includes multiple processors (14, 16) and a protocol timer (18). The protocol timer (18) controls the timing of events in the communications system and operates autonomously after it is loaded with initial instructions by one of the multiple processors (14, 16). The protocol timer (18) utilizes a frame event table (50) and a macro event table (46, 48) to trigger events and to generate interrupts of the multiple processors (14, 16). By allowing the protocol timer (18) to operate autonomously, the processors (14, 16) are relieved of timing control, and can be powered down when not in use, thus reducing power consumption of the communications system. Also, by using the protocol timer (18) to control the timing of events, software related errors and interrupt latencies are reduced.

A high bandwidth cellular data (HBCD) terminal (500) uses multiple transceivers (528, 534, 5450) and modems (520, 532, 538) to simultaneously establish multiple data links to an HBCD server (114) via a mobile central office (MCO 102). Data links are created on the voice bands of cellular channels associated with one or more secondary mobile identification numbers (MINs) assigned to that terminal as more bandwidth is required. A high bandwidth analog cellular communication protocol simultaneously uses the multiple data links to transmit data. The plurality of secondary MINs and simultaneous links allows increased bandwidth with minimal costs associated to the MCO.
