A process for preparing a fluorinated diol compound by reacting the corresponding ketone-alcohol or aldehyde-alcohol with hydrogen over a palladium catalyst in the vapor phase.

Process for preparing fluorinated diols

An azeotrope comprising desflurane (CFCFHOCFH) and hydrogen fluoride (HF). The azeotrope can be prepared by fractionally distilling a crude mixture of desflurane and HF. Purer desflurane can be readily and easily separated from the azeotrope. Separation/purification of desflurane from hydrogen fluoride

A process for purifying crude fluoromethyl 1,1,1,3,3,3-hexafluoroisopropyl ether (sevoflurane). The crude sevoflurane is repeatedly washed with water under conditions and for a time sufficient to reduce the level of 1,1,1,3,3,3-hexafluoroisopropanol (HFIP) to no more than 200 ppm or no more than 100 ppm.

Process for the purification of fluoromethyl 1,1,1,3,3,3-hexafluoroisopropyl ether (sevoflurane)

1,1,1,3,3,3-Hexafluoroisopropanol (HFIP) substantially free of 1,1,1-trifluoroacetone (TFA) can be separated from a mixture containing both compounds by A) catalytic reduction with hydrogen followed by fractional distillation; B) cooling to a temperature at which HFIP freezes and TFA remains liquid; C) forming a high boiling complex comprising HF and TFA followed by fractional distillation; or D) producing HF-free conditions to yield a HFIP/TFA azeotrope followed by fractional distillation. Fluorinated ketones, for example, 1,1,1-trifluoroacetone, can be stabilized against storage degradation by combining with a content of hexafluoroisopropanol (HFIP). Containers containing the stabilized mixture show prolonged storage times compared to containers containing the fluorinated ketones alone. The stabilized mixture can be used as a starting material for reactions requiring fluorinated ketones, for example, 1,1,1-trifluoroacetone, as a starting material.
