The present invention is directed to a method for making a di(aminoaryl)fluorene compound that includes the steps of: (a) reacting a fluorenone compound according structure (I) with excess aminobenzene according to structure (II) wherein: each R, R, R, R, R, and Ris independently a group that is inert in the polymerization of epoxy compounds, and Ris H or (C-C)alkyl, in the presence of an acid catalyst, in a liquid medium comprising an aromatic or substituted aromatic solvent having a boiling point of greater than or equal to 150&#xb0; C. and in the presence of an acid catalyst, in a liquid medium comprising an aromatic or substituted aromatic solvent having a boiling point of greater than or equal to 150&#xb0; C. and from which the di(aminoaryl)fluorene compound is crystallizable, to form a crude product mixture comprising the di(aminoaryl)fluorene compound, (b) crystallizing di(aminoaryl)fluorene compound in the product mixture, and (c) separating the product mixture into crystallized di(aminoaryl)fluorene compound and a filtrate.

Method for making a di(aminoaryl)fluorene compound

A curable composition containing more than 80% by weight of a blend of benzoxazines, wherein the blend includes (A) one or more multifunctional benzoxazines and (B) a liquid, non-halogenated monofunctional benzoxazine. This composition has been found to be stable at high temperatures, e.g. 180&#xb0; C.-250&#xb0; C., and suitable for making composite materials using conventional techniques such as prepregging and liquid resin infusion.

Composite materials containing benzoxazines and method for making the same

The embodiments of the present disclosure present systems and methods for the reversible solubilization of (aryl ether ketones) (PAEKs). A thioacetalization process is employed to modify the PAEKs into poly (aryl ether thioacetals) which, unlike PAEKs, are substantially soluble in common solvents. This modification allowing selected analysis techniques to be more easily performed on PAEKs, such as gel permeation chromatography. The thioacetalization may be reversed through a deprotection reaction to recover the original PAEK without substantial degradation, allowing for non-destructive characterization of the PAEK. Advantageously, the thioacetalization process is generally applicable to a broad range of PAEKs, unlike presently known methods of solubilizing PAEKs. Solubilization of PAEKs further expands the utility of the PAEKs, opening up additional routes to chemical modification of PAEKs, as well as allowing for the possibility of processing PAEKs from solution.

A method of forming a polymer matrix composite using a soluble derivative of a poly (aryl ether ketone) (PAEK). The method includes mixing a starting PAEK polymer with a solvent and an acid, said solvent being selected from a group consisting of diethylether, tetrahydrofuran (THF), dioxin, and chlorinated solvents; reacting the PAEK mixture with a Lewis acid and a thiol compound in amounts effective to form a poly (aryl ether thioacetal) compound which comprises at least one thioacetal group; and impregnating a plurality of fibers in a solution comprising said poly (aryl ether thioacetal) compound.

A curable resin composition containing a blend of multifunctional benzoxazines, and composite materials derived therefrom. The benzoxazine blend contains the combination of (A) a difunctional benzoxazine component and (B) a multifunctional benzoxazine component with functionality of greater than 2. A thermoplastic polymer toughening material in the form of polymeric fibers produced by mixing at least one epoxy curing agent and a thermoplastic polyaromatic polymer to form an admixture, and producing polymeric fibers from the admixture, wherein the thermoplastic polymer toughening material does not include an epoxy resin, and is soluble in an epoxy resin at a temperature lower than a dissolving temperature required by the thermoplastic polymer toughening material without epoxy curing agent.
