A method of controlling a storage device includes detecting a cumulative usage condition associated with the storage device, comparing the cumulative usage condition to a usage value, and adjusting the operation of the storage device based on the comparison. Another method of controlling a storage device includes detecting an operating condition associated with the storage device, comparing the operating condition to a warranty condition, and limiting the operation of the storage device to read-only operation based on the comparison.

System and method for controlling a storage device

Systems, methods, and firmware for operating data storage devices and storage processors are provided herein. In one example, a data storage device is provided. The data storage device includes magnetic storage media configured to store data, read heads configured to read data from the magnetic storage media at associated areal densities, and a storage processor. The storage processor is configured to monitor read error rates of the read heads during operation of the data storage device to identify a degraded one of the read heads, and process at least the read error rates and an areal density of the degraded one of the read heads to modify the areal density of at least the degraded one of the read heads.

A method of printing foil images upon textiles is provided. Advantageously, a digital inkjet printer can be utilized to apply an adhesive for affixing a foil embellishment. The method of printing foil images upon textiles includes applying a pretreatment solution upon a textile. After the pretreatment solution has dried, a white underbase in the form of a fanciful design is printed upon the textile using a digital inkjet printer. A heavy color layer of color ink is then digitally inkjet printed upon the white underbase. Thereafter, the textile is removed from the inkjet printer and positioned upon a heat press table. Foil transfer paper is positioned upon the textile so as to cover the white underbase and heavy color layer. The heat press is activated so as to adhere the foil, but only to those regions where the white underbase and color ink has been printed. Once cool to the touch, the foil is slowly peeled from the textile so as to leave a fanciful foil design.

A method is presented for controlling process delay times between a) thin film deposition and lubricant application, and b) lubricant application and abrasive polishing. Applicants have discovered that for certain lubricants, a minimum delay time after the overcoat has been deposited before the lubricant is applied increases the number of disks passing the glide test after abrasive polishing. In addition, applicants have discovered that for certain lubricants, the abrasive polishing should take place within a maximum time window following the application of the lubricant. A computerized work-in-progress tracking system is preferably used to implement the method of the invention.

Control of process timing during manufacturing of magnetic thin film disks

A method for testing electromagnetic characteristics of magnetic media while maintaining consistent performance of a read/write head and recording channel is disclosed. The disclosed method is performed such that reduced statistical sampling is achieved. The method includes recording a first set of baseline measurements utilizing a first magnetic media with the read/write head and recording channel. The first magnetic media is then removed from an assembly containing the read/write head and recording channel and is replaced with a second magnetic media. Measurements are made utilizing the second magnetic media with the read/write head and recording channel, wherein the measurements are comparable with the baseline measurements and wherein consistent performance of the read/write head and the recording channel is maintained so as to reduce the size of statistical samples needed.

Disk pack swap process for evaluating magnetic recording performance

The subject invention pertains to a method and apparatus for providing a trailer jack mount. The subject invention also pertains to a method and apparatus for providing a trailer jack mount for use with towable trailers. The subject invention is advantageous for use with trailers, such as utility trailers, which are frequently moved between various locations. The subject apparatus can also enable the mounting of a trailer jack to a trailer such that the trailer jack can quickly transition up or down relative to the trailer. In a specific embodiment, the subject invention includes a first piece mountable to a trailer and a second piece to which a trailer jack can be secured. In this embodiment, the subject apparatus also includes means for securely attaching the second piece to the first piece and allowing the second piece to pivot relative to the first piece. Advantageously, the subject invention can either be retrofitted to an existing trailer with jack, or installed at original manufacture. In another specific embodiment, the second piece is slidably attached to the first piece to allow an individual to adjust the height of the trailer jack.

Method and apparatus for trailer jack mount

A method for identifying a problem with a magnetic disk, comprising testing both sides of a disk for read errors using a pair of heads, flipping the disk 180 degrees, again testing both sides of the disk for read errors using the same heads, determining whether one side of the disk has more errors than the other side both before and after the flip, and determining that the disk is the cause of the read errors if the same side of the disk still has more errors than the other side after the flip.

The method of the invention for servo track writer calibration consists of writing magnetic servo tracks and performing optical analysis using Kerr effect microscopy. After the servo tracks are written on the disk, the disk is placed in the optical inspection device having Kerr effect microscopy capability which allows the operator to directly observe the location of 'track zero' which is conventionally the track nearest to the inner diameter (ID) of the disk. An embodiment of the method comprising measuring a plurality of distances from a selected points on the track zero to obtain an average measurement indicative of a position of track zero on the magnetic disk. The measured data is then used to calibrate or adjust the servo writer.

A method of yield improvement for manufactured products includes providing an identification plan for parts and processing equipment, whereby each part and each piece of equipment is given unique and traceable identification data. A database is provided into which the parts identification data and the processing equipment identification data are stored, and related. The parts are processed in at least one processing stage by the processing equipment to yield processed parts, and the processed parts are tested for defects. Problems are then identified through the testing of the processed parts. The related parts identification data and the processing equipment identification data are retrieved from the database, and the data is analyzed to trace the parts to the appropriate processing equipment. Corrections and repairs are made to the processing equipment to correct the problems. Improvement to yield of the manufactured products is then confirmed.

A system for improving manufacturing yields, which includes at least one manufacturing facility into which unprocessed parts enter. An identification plan is provided for the unprocessed parts, by which each unprocessed part is given unique and traceable unprocessed part identification data. Processing equipment is included by which the unprocessed parts are turned into processed parts. There are identification plans for the processing equipment and for the processed parts by which each piece of equipment and each processed part is given unique and traceable processing equipment identification data. At least one computer terminal is connected to a database into which the unprocessed parts identification data, the processed parts identification data and the processing equipment identification data is stored, and related. This data is retrievable to allow processed parts with defects to be traced to the processing equipment by which it was processed for repair or modification of the processing equipment.

System for yield improvement of manufactured products

A method for detecting manufacturing marks on sputtered disks includes rotating the disk three hundred and sixty degrees. As the disk rotates, a sensor is used to detect a quantity of manufacturing marks formed on the outer edge of the disk. If there are less than four manufacturing marks on the edge of the disk, a signal is sent to a warning device to indicate that the disk is defective. The lack of a manufacturing mark is an indication that a gripper used to hold the disk within the sputtering chamber during the sputtering process is bent or otherwise misaligned. As such, a signal is also sent to the warning device to indicate that the grippers within the sputtering chamber must be inspected.
