A taper-locking ferrule for use with optical fibers is provided. The taper-locking ferrule has an interior channel. The interior channel is tapered from one end to the other end and has a threaded interior portion. In an embodiment, the threaded interior portion covers approximately half of the interior wall of the channel. A slit may extend along the threaded portion, from the exterior surface of the device to the interior channel, dividing the threaded portion of the interior channel into sections and allowing the interior channel to slightly expand. The threaded portion of the interior channel grasps and secures an optical fiber.

Taper-locking ferrule

A tool for cleaving a plastic optical fiber has a body with a cleaving aperture at the insertion face of the body and through which the termination end section of the plastic optical fiber is inserted and in which an operative section is positioned upon inserting the plastic optical fiber into the tool. A cutting blade has a cutting edge and is moveable along a cutting path between a first operative position at which the cutting edge is spaced from the cleaving axis and a second operative position at which the cutting edge intersects the cleaving axis to cleave the plastic optical fiber to create an optical finish on an end surface of the operative section of the plastic optical fiber. A clearance region is located at the termination face of the body and generally aligned with the cleaving aperture and in which the termination end section may deflect upon engagement of the cutting blade with the plastic optical fiber.

Optical fiber tool

An improved cable assembly includes at least a first elongated signal-carrying cable and a protector that has an elongated covering apparatus that is connected with the signal-carrying cable. The covering apparatus has a resilient portion having a number of corrugations. The signal-carrying cable is received within the covering apparatus, and the resilient portion is moved from a free state to a collapsed state. The signal-carrying cable and the covering apparatus are received at least partially in an uncured quantity of potting compound, and the compound is then permitted to cure.

Cable assembly with protector, and accompanying method

A connector is provided which has a ferrule forcibly, intimately connected to a plastic optical fiber by forcibly deforming the ferrule into intimate contact with the plastic optical fiber over a preselected length. The fiber and ferrule are free of adhesive, have a machined planar end oriented 90 degrees relative to the axis of the ferrule and plastic optical fiber and have a preselected, carefully controlled length.

Plastic optical fiber connector

An apparatus and method for finishing the terminal end of a connector assembly which has a ferrule fixedly connected to a plastic optic fiber. The apparatus precisely maintains the connector assembly against transverse movement during cutting operations and a diamond cutting element precisely finishes the terminal end of the connector assembly relative to the connector assembly axis.
