A method includes determining whether a multiphase electric machine is unstable. The method also includes, in response to a determination that the multiphase electric machine is unstable, setting a gate voltage of a first three terminal semiconductor switch to zero. The method also includes, in response to a determination that the multiphase electric machine is stable, setting the gate voltage of the first three terminal semiconductor switch to nonzero. The method also includes, in response to the first three terminal semiconductor switch being set to zero, increasing electrical conduction from one phase of the multiphase electric machine to another phase of the multiphase electric machine. The method includes, in response to the first three terminal semiconductor switch being set to nonzero, increasing electrical resistance from the one phase of the multiphase electric machine to the another phase of the multiphase electric machine.

Solid state motor damping

A position identification assembly for a steering column is provided. The assembly may include a mount bracket, a steering column, a sensor, and a controller. The mount bracket may define an opening to the cavity. The steering column may be mounted to the mount bracket for translation at least partially in to and out of the cavity and the steering column may define one or more physical features therealong. The sensor may be secured to the mount bracket to detect the physical features. Each of the one or more physical features may be arranged upon the steering column such that the sensor detects the one or more physical features when the steering column translates between positions and may send a signal to the controller reflecting the same. The controller is programmed to identify a steering column position based on the received signal.

Position identification assembly for steering column

In one aspect, a wake-up circuit is provided for triggering a determination of an absolute rotational position of a rotatable shaft of a motor in an electric power steering system of a vehicle. The wake-up circuit includes a plurality of inputs coupled to separate phases of the motor. A voltage boosting circuit is operable to increase a back electromotive force (EMF) voltage induced on one or more of the inputs by rotation of the rotatable shaft of the motor and produce at least one voltage-boosted back EMF voltage. A comparator circuit is operable to compare the at least one voltage-boosted back EMF voltage to a reference voltage and trigger a monitoring system to perform the determination of the absolute rotational position of the rotatable shaft of the motor in the electric power steering system based on a result of the compare during an ignition off state of the vehicle.

Wake-up circuit in an electric steering system

A steering system for detecting a hand wheel position is provided and includes an input shaft connected to a hand wheel, a main gear disposed around the input shaft, a puck gear meshingly engaged with the main gear, and a control module. The control module receives an angular main position of the main gear and an angular puck position of the puck gear. The control module includes a rotational calculation module for calculating the hand wheel position based on at least the angular main position and the angular puck position.

A diagnostic system and method for an electric power steering system are provided. The diagnostic system includes a first microprocessor that determines a first relative position value indicating the relative rotational position of the rotatable shaft at the first time based on the signals from first and second position sensors. A second microprocessor determines a second relative position value indicating the relative rotational position of the rotatable shaft at the first time based on the signals from third and fourth position sensors. The first microprocessor determines whether the first relative position value is an acceptable value based on a difference between the first relative position value and the second relative position value.

Diagnostic system and method for an electric power steering system

A system and a method for determining an absolute position of a motor shaft in an electric power steering system during an ignition off state are provided. The system includes a microprocessor that energizes first and second position sensors to generate first and second signals, respectively, at a first time, and third and fourth signals, respectively, at a second time. The microprocessor determines a first relative position value based on the first and second signals, and a second relative position value based on the third and fourth signals. The microprocessor determines an amount of relative rotation of the shaft during the ignition off state based on the first and second relative position values, and determines a current absolute position value based on a previously stored absolute position value and the amount of relative rotation of the rotatable shaft.

System and method for determining an absolute position of a motor shaft in an electric steering system

A system and a method for adjusting a dead-time interval between de-activating a first transistor and activating a second transistor in a motor control circuit are provided. The method includes determining a plurality of commanded torque values associated with a motor based on a received signal over time. The method further includes setting the dead-time interval value equal to a first value when one commanded torque value of the plurality of commanded torque values is within a first torque range. The method further includes decreasing the dead-time interval value as other commanded torque values of the plurality of commanded torque values increase over time within a second torque range. The second torque range is greater than the first torque range. The dead-time interval value is indicative of a desired dead-time interval.

System and method for adjusting a dead-time interval in a motor control circuit

A method and system for obtaining motor current measurements from a DC bus current of an inverter that drives a pulse width modulated electric machine is disclosed. The method may include sensing a DC bus current in a sensor located on a bus of an inverter; sampling the DC bus current via an analog to digital converter wherein the sampling is controlled by sampling timing that is based on a pulse width modulation timing of the inverter; and determining three AC phase currents of the motor from the sampled DC bus current.
