A conductive focus waffle structure for focusing electrons emitted from a cathode portion of a flat panel display device. In one embodiment, the conductive focus waffle structure comprises a grid of material comprised of substantially orthogonally oriented rows and columns. The substantially orthogonally oriented rows and columns define openings therebetween having sufficient size to allow electrons emitted from a cathode portion of a flat panel display device to pass therethrough. The focus waffle grid further comprises a lower dielectric portion adapted to be coupled to the cathode portion of the flat panel display device and an upper conductive portion coupled to the lower dielectric portion, the upper conductive portion adapted to focus the electrons passing through the openings.

A method for creating a color filter on a display screen that allows better and more efficient adhesion of color pigment crystals to the screen display structure. In one embodiment, the present invention creates a color filter on a glass substrate having a pixel-defining structure. The present embodiment first creates a color filter material by mixing a potassium silicate solution with a color crystal pigment. The color filter material is then applied onto the interior surface of the display screen. The material is then dried. The dried color filter material is then exposed to a visible light from the exterior side of the display screen. The visible light exposes the color filter material through a photomask and through the display screen. The excess layer of color filter material is then removed, leaving behind a color filter of desired transmission wavelength such that light having similar wavelength are substantially transmitted and light of wavelengths different from said color pigment crystals are substantially filtered out by absorption.

Method for creating a color filter layer on a field emission display screen structure

A conductive focus waffle structure for focusing electrons emitted from a cathode portion of a flat panel display device, and a method for forming the conductive focus waffle structure. In one embodiment, the present invention applies a first layer of photo-imagable material above a cathode portion of a flat panel display device. This embodiment then removes portions of the layer of photo-imagable material such that openings are formed therein. A layer of conductive material is then applied over the cathode such that conductive material is disposed within the openings in the layer of photo-imagable material. A dielectric layer of material is also disposed between the cathode and the bottom surface of the conductive material. This embodiment of the present invention then removes the layer of photo-imagable material such that at least a portion of the conductive focus waffle structure is formed disposed above the cathode. In so doing, at least a first portion of a conductive focus waffle structure having a dielectric bottom portion is formed.

Method for forming a conductive focus waffle

A method for forming a planar aluminum layer in a flat panel display structure. In one embodiment, the present invention creates a flat panel display structure having a raised black matrix defining wells within the matrix. The present embodiment then deposits a non-conformal layer of acrylic-containing aluminizing lacquer over a layer of phosphors residing within the wells of the black matrix. In so doing, the lacquer layer forms a substantially planar surface on top of the phosphors. The present invention then deposits a layer of catalyst material over the layer of lacquer so that the aluminizing lacquer can be burned off completely and cleanly at a relatively low temperature. The catalytic layer conforms to the planar surface of the lacquer layer. The present invention then deposits an aluminum layer over the catalytic layer. The aluminum layer, in turn, conforms to the planar surface of the catalytic layer. Finally, the present invention bakes off the non-conformal lacquer layer. The baking process is conducted at a temperature such that the lacquer layer is cleanly and completely oxidized. This temperature is relatively low so as not to adversely affect the reflectivity of the aluminum layer, damage the black matrix material, or induce oxidation of phosphors. After the baking process, the present invention achieves a substantially planar and mirror-like aluminum surface.

Method for creating a planar aluminum layer in a flat panel display

A method for forming a conductively coated matrix structure for separating rows and columns of sub-pixels on the faceplate of a flat panel display device. In one embodiment, the present invention deposits a photoresistive material over the interior surface of a faceplate having a non-conductive matrix structure formed thereon. The photoresistive material is deposited into sub-pixel regions separated by the matrix structure. The photoresistive material is dried and exposed in the sub-pixel regions. After unexposed photoresistive material is removed, a layer of aluminum is evaporated over the interior surface of the faceplate such that the matrix structure and the exposed layer of photoresistive material in the sub-pixel regions is coated with a conductive layer of aluminum. Next, the present invention applies an etchant to the exposed photoresistive material disposed in the sub-pixel regions. The etchant removes the exposed photoresistive material and the overlying conductive layer of aluminum from the sub-pixel regions such that the conductive layer of aluminum remains only on the matrix structure, and does not cover the sub-pixel regions.

Black matrix with conductive coating

A multi-level conductive matrix structure for separating rows and columns of sub-pixels on the faceplate of a flat panel display device. In one embodiment, the present invention is formed partially of a first plurality of conductive ridges which are disposed on the faceplate between respective adjacent rows of sub-pixel regions. The present invention is further formed of a second plurality of conductive ridges which are orthogonally oriented with respect to and integral with the first plurality of conductive ridges such that a matrix structure is formed. In the conductive matrix of the present invention, the second plurality of conductive ridges have a height which is greater than the height of the first plurality of conductive ridges such that a multi-level conductive matrix is formed. However, the height of the second plurality of conductive ridges decreases to approximately the height of the first plurality of conductive ridges at respective intersections of the first and second plurality of conductive ridges. In so doing, the present invention provides a multi-level conductive matrix for separating rows and columns of sub-pixels on the faceplate of a flat panel display device.

Method for forming a multi-level conductive black matrix for a flat

A method for creating a color filter on a display screen that allows better and more efficient adhesion of color pigment crystals to the screen display structure. In one embodiment, the present invention creates a color filter on a glass substrate having a pixel-defining structure. The present embodiment first creates a color filter slurry by mixing a polyvinyl alcohol solution with a color crystal pigment. The color filter slurry is then applied onto the interior surface of the display screen. The slurry is then dried. The dried color filter slurry is then exposed to an UV light from the exterior side of the display screen. The UV light exposes the color filter slurry through a photomask and through the display screen. The excess layer of color filter slurry is then removed, leaving behind a color filter of desired transmission wavelength such that light having similar wavelength are substantially transmitted and light of wavelengths different from said color pigment crystals are substantially filtered out by absorption.

Method for creating a color filter layer on a field emission display

A method for creating a faceplate of a display provides a faceplate substrate with a faceplate interior side and a faceplate exterior side. A plurality of barriers are formed on the faceplate interior side, with the barriers defining a plurality of subpixel volumes. Phosphor containing photopolymerizable material mixtures of red, green and blue, are deposited into subpixel volumes, and create a faceplate interior side/phosphor interface. At least a portion of the phosphor containing photopolymerizable material mixture is exposed with sufficient actinic light through the faceplate interior side/phosphor interface to polymerize a selected depth of the phosphor containing photopolymerizable material mixture in the subpixel volumes, and form a polymerized phosphor containing material in a plurality of subpixel volumes. Non-polymerized phosphor containing photopolymerizable material is removed from the polymerized phosphor containing material.

High resolution flat panel phosphor screen with tall barriers

A method for forming a three-dimensional multi-level conductive matrix structure for a flat panel display device. In one embodiment, the present invention forms first pixel separating structures across a surface of a faceplate of a flat panel display. The first pixel separating structures separate adjacent first sub-pixel regions. In this embodiment, the first pixel separating structures are formed by applying a first layer of photo-imagable material across the surface of the faceplate. Next, portions of the first layer of photo-imagable material are removed to leave regions of the first layer of photo-imagable material covering respective first sub-pixel regions. Then, a first layer of conductive material is applied over the surface of the faceplate such that the first layer conductive material is disposed between the aforementioned regions of the first layer of photo-imagable material. The present invention then removes the regions of the first layer of photo-imagable material leaving only first pixel separating structures formed of the first layer of conductive material, disposed between the first sub-pixel regions. The present invention performs similar steps in order to form second pixel separating structures between the second sub-pixel regions. The second pixel separating structures are formed substantially orthogonally oriented with respect to the first pixel separating structures and, in the present embodiment, have a different height than the first pixel separating structures. In so doing, a three-dimensional multi-level conductive matrix structure is formed.
