The pressure seal product includes a roll of paper having a pressure-sensitive adhesive applied in a predetermined pattern to one or both faces of the paper web for forming mailers. The paper is rewound onto a roll with a tension and weight such that insufficient pressure is exerted for activating the pressure sensitive adhesive. The roll of paper with the pressure sensitive adhesive applied is fed into a printer for printing information on the paper web. The web is then passed through a cutter and a folder for folding the cut sheets into a mailer. The mailers are passed through a pressure sealer for applying pressure to the areas of the mailer containing the pressure-sensitive adhesive to activate the adhesive and secure the mailer.

Pressure seal roll product and apparatus and methods using the product to form mailers

In the manufacture of integrated labels it is desirable to apply pressure sensitive adhesive in a continuous manner, yet it is undesirable for active adhesive to be on one or more edges of the form since active adhesive can interfere with nip rollers upon entering a laser or other non-impact printer, or can otherwise interfere with proper operation of the printer. By using an adhesive--that is de-tackified by direct exposure to a sufficient type and dosage of electromagnetic radiation (such as a hot melt adhesive de-tackified by applying about 3000 mJ/cm.sup.2 total dosage of ultraviolet radiation)--that problem may be avoided. Apparatus for producing integrated labels with the adhesive at one or more edges being de-tackified may include a first conveyor for conveying sheets (either in stacked or single sheet form) in a first direction, and at least one ultraviolet radiation source mounted adjacent a side of the conveyor parallel to the first direction. A stacker, packaging device (such as a shrink wrap machine), 90.degree. conveyor, and/or turn table may also be utilized.

De-tackified labels extrusion process applied integrated label product

Labels with release liners, including integrated labels, are manufactured in a simple manner that does not require two webs of material. A pressure sensitive adhesive is applied (e.g. patterned coated) in a first strip on a second face of a web of label material (e.g. bond paper). Then silicone release material is applied in a second strip on the second face of the web of label material so that the second strip is adjacent, but spaced from, the first strip and substantially parallel to it, a line of demarcation (about 1-25 mm wide) provided between the first and second strips, and each strip is at least about one inch wide. Then the label material is folded (e.g. plow folded while on a Webtron press) about the line of demarcation so that the first and second strips come into face-to-face contact with each other. Then individual labels are formed from the label material by die cutting and/or slitting, each label having a first ply with a first printable face corresponding to the first face of the web from which it is ultimately formed, and a second pressure sensitive adhesive covered face corresponding to the second face of the web from which it is ultimately formed, and a second ply with a first face corresponding to the first face of the web from which it is ultimately formed and a second release material covered face corresponding to the second face of the web from which it is ultimately formed, the second faces of the plies in face-to-face engagement with each other. When integrated labels are manufactured, the matrix material is removed after die cutting.
