A avian cell line that supports replication of animal or human viruses, which cell line is adapted to animal-product free growth. The cell line is useful for propagating a virus suitable as a live or a killed vaccine and for virus isolation and diagnostic assays.

Immortal avian cell line and methods of use

A gene encoding for A antigen precursor, derived from a Avian herpesvirus, is described. The gene is preferably isolated from a Marek's disease herpesvirus virus (MDHV) and is approximately 1.8-1.9 kbp, found on a DNA fragment of about 2.35 kbp in size. The gene can be used as a building block for vaccines, directly as a diagnostic hybridization probe, to facilitate preparation of diagnostic test kits for MDHV by antigen production and subsequent antibody production, and as a potential source of regulatory elements such as signal peptides or promoters for use with other proteins.

A sustainable cell line of a Marek's disease herpesvirus (MDV) infected chicken cell line derived from chick embryo cells which are chicken helper factor (Chf) negative and which have been treated with N-methyl-N-nitro-N-nitrosoguansidine (MNNG) and then converted with the MDV which is able to infect avians in vivo. The cell line is useful for vaccine production and for determining the characteristics of the MDV under various conditions.
