A method of managing workflows related to storage services provided by a service provider to a customer (via a management system) is presented. The management system includes a Web server and a workflow process. The Web server presents to a customer a task screen (or set of task screens) for a customer-selected work order request type so that the customer can prepare and submit a work order request to the management system. After receiving the work order request, the Web server uses information contained in and associated with the request to create a database object that includes some or all of the following elements: customer identifier; work order identifier, date/time of request; request state (e.g., new, open or closed); type of request; parameters or arguments to the request; and any textual description provided by the customer. The Web server stores the object in a database. The workflow process locates the new request in the database, performs the task specified by the request and closes the work order request by updating the object with the appropriate state. The workflow process generates a billable event corresponding to the work order request and enters that billable event in an account record of the customer that submitted the request. The account record can then be used to generate billing information. If the workflow process cannot complete the task successfully, an administrator of the service provider may perform the task, close the work order request and enter the billable event in the customer account record.

Workflow database for scalable storage service

A service provider management system (SPMS) that connects to storage resources in a datacenter controlled by a service provider and a database that stores information about the datacenter and customers that receive the storage resources as a service. The SPMS enables the service provider to allocate storage resources to a customer and to assign ownership to billable devices, such as disks, volumes, ports, and so forth, as well as to generate billing information based on hardware configuration and customer usage. The SPSM is supported on a server architecture, which includes a Web server that exports a first interface to the service provider to enable the service provider to manage the data storage resources to which the SPMS is connected, and a second interface to the customer to enable the customer to manage the allocated data storage resources directly.

Mediation device for scalable storage service

A method and apparatus for automatically provisioning at least a portion of a computer system to meet a specification provided in a provisioning request. In one embodiment, the provisioning includes provisioning at least one resource from each of at least one host computer, at least one storage system, and at least one connectivity resource that connects the at least one host computer to the at least one storage system. In another embodiment, the provisioning includes selecting and configuring at least one logical volume of storage and configuring the computer system to provide access to the selected volume. In another aspect, a computer-readable provisioning transaction is created to provision the computer system, and a computer-readable undo transaction is created to undo it. In a further embodiment, an existing computer system is reverse engineered to create a specification that is modified to create the specification in the provisioning request.

Method and apparatus for provisioning storage resources

A registration application that allows a service provider customer that is using data storage resources (storage and/or storage-related services) provided by the service provider to register with a Service Provider Management System (SPMS) that is maintained by the service provider. The registration application executes on each of the customer's servers (that is, those which are connected to resources being used) to produce registration information and provides that registration information to the SPMS. The resources have a scratch pad storage area that is used by the servers and the SPMS to communicate with each other. The registration information is passed to the SPMS by the servers indirectly via the scratch pad area. The SPMS uses the registration information to associate customer information with the resources used by that customer's servers. The association of the customer information and resources can then be used by the SPMS to track customer usage of the resources for billing and other applications.

Scalable storage service registration application

A file system is migrated from a source file server to a target file server in a data network while permitting clients to have concurrent read/write access to the file system. The target file server issues directory read requests and file read requests to the source file server in accordance with a network file access protocol to transfer the file system from the source file server to the target file server. Concurrent with the transfer of the file system from the source file server to the target file server, the target file server responds to client read/write requests for access to the file system. In a preferred embodiment, the target file server maintains a hierarchy of on-line nodes off-line nodes. The online nodes represent file system objects that have been completely migrated, and the offline nodes representing file system objects that have not been completely migrated. The target file server executes a background process that walks through the hierarchy in order to migrate the objects of the offline nodes. When an object has been completely migrated, the target file server changes the offline node for the object to an online node for the object.

Mechanisms and techniques disclose a system that provides access to data using a two part cache. The system receives a data access request containing a first data reference, such as an open systems request to access data. The system then obtains a history cache entry from a history cache based on the first data reference and obtains a partition cache entry from a partition cache based on the first data reference. Cache entries contain mappings between open systems reference locations and non-open systems references to locations in the data to be accessed. The system then performs a data access operation as specified by the data access request using a second data reference based upon either the history cache entry or the partition cache entry. Upon performance of the data access operation, the system then updates the history and partition caches with new cache entries and can resize the partition and history caches as needed.

Methods and apparatus for accessing data using a cache

The system of the invention is a data server that can provide access to data, such as mainframe data, by open systems platforms. The system includes a shared storage interface coupling a first computing system to a shared storage device in which the shared data is maintained by a second computing system in a manner that is not natively compatible to the first computing system. The computing system further includes a data access server which executes on the processor in the first computing system. When executing, the data access server receives, via the network interface, a client message to access data on the shared storage device and in response to receiving the client message, retrieves, via the network interface, data storage information provided from the second computing system coupled to the first computing system. The data storage information is stored in the memory system and allows the data access server on the first computing system to access the data in the shared storage device in a manner that is compatible with the first computing system. The data access server can also provide a virtual file system to allow networked clients that implement file or other data sharing protocols such as NFS and CIFS.
