This document describes techniques and apparatuses, including card connector assemblies with integrated component shielding for electronic devices. The card connector assembly includes frame, a riser, and a shielded contact block. The frame includes a card holder that receives a universal integrated circuit card (UICC). The riser supports the card holder spaced apart from the PCB. The shielded contact block configured for surface mounting to a printed circuit board (PCB) that includes an electronic component. The shielded contact block includes a recess that receives a portion of the electronic component therein, an interconnect that connects at least one pin on the UICC with at least one contact, and a component shield located in the recess. The component shield defines a shielded area configured to attenuate electromagnetic waves generated by the electronic component.

A device includes: a sensor component; and a touch panel comprising: touch-registration circuitry; a mesh comprising conductors, wherein at least some of the conductors are routed to a junction; and a flex circuit coupled between the junction and the touch-registration circuitry, wherein the flex circuit is longer than a distance between the junction and the touch-registration circuitry to accommodate routing of the flex circuit past the sensor component.

An electronic device including a display panel is provided. In some embodiments, the display panel includes an active display region and an electrical component. The electrical component is distinct from a touch sensor device that is adapted to receive touch input across the active display region of the display panel. An electrical conductor connects the electrical component to another component of the electronic device via the display panel, such as via a bent portion of the display panel.

A display assembly includes an electronic display that comprises a collection of substrate layers and that has a first outline. The display assembly also includes a cover lens that: (i) is affixed to the electronic display, (ii) has a second outline that is larger than the first outline, and (iii) forms a stepped area at an overlap between the first and second outlines. The display assembly further includes a frame that: (a) supports a portion of the electronic display on at least two opposing sides of the electronic display, (b) attaches to the cover lens such that a substantial portion of the stepped area is covered by a portion of the frame, and (c) connects to a housing of an electronic device such that the display assembly is supported by the housing of the electronic device via the frame being connected to the housing of the electronic device.

A sensor system includes a housing having a front surface and a rear surface. The housing defines a bore that extends from the front surface toward the rear surface and that includes one or more lenses. The housing includes an image sensor adjacent at least a first lens and that is aligned with the bore. The system includes a proximity-sensing device mounted on the front surface of the housing. The system further includes a conductor element shared by the proximity-sensing device and the image sensor. The conductor element provides an electrical connection between (i) at least one circuit board of an electronic device and (ii) the proximity-sensing device and the image sensor.

In an embodiment of the disclosed principles, a modular portable device includes a first module acting as a traditional high-function phone or 'smartphone' and a second module that adds enhanced functionality to the first module. When the modules are separated, they may operate independently of each other. In an embodiment, when the first module and the second module are docked together and a voice call is placed with the first module, the earpiece speaker, microphone, and cellular connection of the first module are utilized. During the voice call, a Bluetooth connection between the first module and the second module may be established in anticipation of an undocking event to eliminate a delay in audio transfer from the first module to the second module.

An electronic device includes: a display assembly including an electronic display configured to generate an optical image viewable from in front of the electronic device; a proximity sensor coupled to at least a portion of the display assembly, the proximity sensor including a sensing element configured to be responsive to presence of an object in front of the electronic device, the sensing element supported by a support structure having an upper surface facing a frontal direction of the electronic device; and a conductor that electrically connects the sensing element of the proximity sensor and the portion of the display assembly, the conductor including a conductive path extending along the support structure to the upper surface of the support structure.

Systems, methods, and devices for securing structures include a fastener that includes a threaded body and a head. The head includes a rounded axial protrusion having a first radial diameter, and a noncircular radial portion for securing the fastener. The noncircular radial portion has a second radial diameter greater than the first radial diameter. The noncircular radial portion is positioned between the threaded body and the rounded axial protrusion.

System, apparatus, and method for securing structures

An electronic device including a display assembly is provided. In some embodiments, the electronic device includes a flex conductor electrically connecting a display integrated circuit and a circuit board. The flex conductor may have a display end including first and second connectors separated by a space and a circuit board connector end including a third connector opposite from the display connector end.

A modular device system is provided having a base portable electronic communication device. The base portable electronic communication device has a display side and a reverse side, and one or more antennas being located along one of the device edges. A ground element on the reverse side of the housing is adjacent to the antennas and is grounded to the chassis. A multi-pin connector array on the same side is located adjacent to the ground element and the ground element lies between the connector array and the antennas. The ground element is configured to contact a mating ground element on an add-on module when the module is mated to the base portable electronic communication device.

In an embodiment of the disclosed principles, a modular device system includes a base device configured to accept multiple modules at once. The system further includes thin modules designed to stack upon one another on the base device to provide extended functionality. In an embodiment, an alignment mechanism is provided to allow multiple modules to be easily stacked such that their stacking also provides convenient electrical interconnection between the modules and the base device.

A system and method of remote imaging allows a camera module in a modular portable electronic device environment to be removed from a base module without halting an image capture session being displayed on a display of the base module. In an embodiment, image data may be captured by both the camera module and the base module. A hardwired connection connects the devices when the camera module is docked on the base module, while a wireless connection maintains the connection between the devices when the camera module is undocked from the base module during an image capture session.

A housing for an electronic device and a method for manufacturing the housing are provided that combine metal and plastic in an aesthetically pleasing manner while meeting physical and technical requirements and specifications for the electronic device. Metal islands may be engaged with a plastic member so that projections of the plastic member are interlocked with corresponding recesses of formed between each of the metal islands. An exterior of the housing includes a surface of each of the metal islands and at least a portion of a surface of the plastic member. The interior of the housing includes another surface of the plastic member.

A modular portable device system and method allow extended user input. The system includes a first device and a second device, the devices being attachable via a plurality of magnetic attachment points (magnets or magnetically responsive attachment points) on each. In a first configuration, the devices are held together by all of the magnetic attachment points, and in this configuration an extended user input facility on the second device is not user-accessible. In a second configuration, the devices are connected by only a subset of the magnetic attachment points, and in this second configuration the extended user input facility is user-accessible. A Hall Effect sensor on the first device and sensor magnet on the second device are positioned to overlap when the devices are connected in the second configuration in order to alert the first device that the second device has been attached in the extended input mode.
