An exhaust gas recirculation valve having a reciprocating pintle shaft supported by a sleeve bushing and having a labyrinthine pathway between a valve operating chamber and a shaft/bushing interface to minimize intrusion of exhaust gases into the interface. The labyrinthine pathway is formed between fixed annular elements of the valve body and shaft bushing and a movable annular element of the valve head telescopically disposed between the fixed elements.

Apparatus for preventing valve stem coking

A shield for a gas management pintle valve, such as an exhaust gas recirculation valve for an internal combustion engine, for mitigating leakage of gas and moisture along the valve pintle into the actuator, to prevent corrosion and failure of the actuator. The shield is a tubular member having an equatorial radial flange and is slidably mounted on the pintle in an annular chamber between the valve body and the actuator. The inner diameter of the tube is selected to be as close-fitting to the pintle as possible while still being slidable thereupon to be adapted to either of two operating positions. During engine shutdowns, the shield is drawn by gravity toward the valve body to form a first seal with the flange against the pintle bearing or a bearing splash shield, preventing or minimizing the escape of moist, hot gases under low pressure from the valve along the pintle. During engine running, high-pressure exhaust gases within the valve may be forced along the pintle through the bearing bore and bearing splash shield toward the actuator. The gases force the shield to slide along the pintle, opening the first seal and forming a second seal with the flange against the actuator, allowing the leaked gases to escape radially from the pintle without invading the actuator.

Adaptable gas and moisture shield for a gas management valve

A relatively simple pressure balanced high flow exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve includes an actuator and a separately formed valve assembly retained to the actuator by a deformed lip. The valve body has dual seats controlled by axially spaced heads which are pressure balanced when closed and allow high gas flow when open. The valve body and the associated valve shaft, or portions thereof, are formed of materials having similar coefficients of thermal expansion so that the shaft and body experience similar thermal growth and good seating of the spaced valves is maintained regardless of gas temperature variations. Thickened portions at the valve seats comprise annular ends of a control portion which resist distortion of the seats. The valve body is configured for installation in a cylindrical bore or recess of an associated manifold or other gas passage defining member. Seal rings, preferably of elastomeric material, seal the controlled flow passages and maintain a small gap between the valve body walls and the passage defining member to minimize heat transfer and assist equalization of the body and valve shaft expansion rates. One or both of the valve heads may be attached to the shaft by a press and spin or crimping process to promote ease of assembly. The valve shaft may be supported by a single bushing carried in the mounting portion. A shaft seal in the bushing may include a lip responsive to gas pressures to vary the sealing force, for example, under turbocharged conditions.

High flow gas force balanced EGR valve

Relatively simple partially or completely pressure balanced valves are disclosed having relatively low friction and gas forces to be overcome by a solenoid actuator. Various devices are provided for sealing of the valve members to maintain low leakage of gases through the valve or into the actuator. Movable members of the valve and actuator are engaged but physically separate so they may be separately replaced. Various actuators may by applied with various valve assemblies for flexibility in meeting the requirements of alternative applications.

Pressure balanced gas valve

A valve assembly for regulating air flow to an internal combustion engine comprises a valve body having a valve bore forming an induction passage, and a shaft extending across the valve bore. A valve member is secured to the shaft for rotation in excess of 90 degrees between a nonactuating position and a maximum actuating position. The valve member passes through a zero degree position when rotated from the maximum actuating position to the nonactuating position. The flow area around the valve member when in the zero degree position is less than the flow area when the valve member is in the nonactuating position. A return mechanism urges the valve member toward the nonactuating position when the valve member is rotated away from the nonactuating position.
