An optical sensing element for use in the detection of hydrogen peroxide includes a sensing compound provided as a coating on a substrate. The sensing compound, on exposure to hydrogen peroxide, forms a luminescent reporter compound when excited with stimulating radiation at a predetermined wavelength that the sensing compound does not absorb.

Detection method

A dendrimer of formula (I): [DENDRON]-CORE-[B-[X]](I) wherein: CORE is a metal ion or a group containing a metal ion, or is a non-polymeric organic group; B is a phenyl ring; a is an integer of from 1 to 8; b is an integer of from 3 to 5; x is zero or an integer of from 1 to 7; each X is an aryl or heteroaryl ring, or is an at least partially conjugated dendritic molecular structure; each DENDRONis an at least partially conjugated dendritic molecular structure; and wherein the dendrimer further comprises one or more surface groups; with the proviso that where CORE is a non-metallic core, then X is an at least partially conjugated dendritic molecular structure comprising at least one linking group.

Highly branched dendrimers

The invention provides a dye-sensitized photovoltaic device which comprises: a first electrode; a second electrode; and, disposed between the first and second electrodes: an electron acceptor material which comprises a semiconductive metal oxide, a redox mediator material, and a photosensitizing dye which comprises a dendrimer of formula (I): [X]-CORE-[[Y]-[DENDRON]]wherein n, m, p, CORE, DENDRON, X and Y are as defined herein. The invention further provides a photosensitizing dye which is a dendrimer of formula (I), and the use, as a photosensitizing dye in a dye-sensitized photovoltaic device, of a compound which is a dendrimer of formula (T). Novel dendrimers of formula (T) are also provided. Novel catechol-based compounds are also provided. The catechol-based compounds can be used together with the dendrimers of formula (T) as the photosensitizing dyes in a photovoltaic device. Accordingly, the invention further provides photosensitizing dyes and dye-sensitized photovoltaic devices comprising such catechol compounds, and the use of such catechol compounds as photosensitizing dyes in a dye-sensitized photovoltaic device.

Branched materials for photovoltaic devices

A charge-neutral organometallic dendrimer is described, said dendrimer having the formula (I):CORE-[DENDRITE(-Q)]&#x2003;&#x2003;(I)in which CORE represents a group of formula MXY, in which M represents a metal cation, x represents an integer of 1 or more, each X which may be the same or different represents a mono-, bi- or tri-dentate coordinating group, z represents 0 or an integer of 1 or more, and each Y which may be the same or different represents a coordinating group, the total of (b.x)+(c.z) being equal to the number of coordination sites on M, wherein b is the number of coordination sites on X and c is the number of coordination sites on Y; n represents an integer of 2 or more; each DENDRITE which may be the same or different represents a dendritic molecular structure bonded to a group X; a represents 0 or an integer of 1 or more; and each Q which may be the same or different represents a surface group; CORE terminating in the first single bond which is connected to a branching group or branching atom of DENDRITE; which dendrimer has a structure in which no hemisphere of a notional sphere centered on M and containing the dendrimer is devoid of a said first single bond.

Neutral metallic dendrimer complexes

The invention provides a cyclometallated complex comprising the structure of formula I wherein: The invention also provides the use of such complexes in optoelectronic devices, and in particular in organic light emitting devices.

Organic phosphorescent material and organic optoelectronic device

A process for modifying at least one dendron that is intended to form part of a dendrimer is disclosed. One reacts at least one reactable unsaturated group in a chemoselective manner to form a less unsaturated group. Also disclosed is a process for modifying dendrimers in a similar manner.

Reactive organometallic dendrimers

A composition is described comprising a mixture of at least two different dendrimers A and B which possess the same core and the same repeating unit or units in the dendrons. Either the generation of at least one of said dendrons in one of said dendrimers (A) is different from the generation of at least one of the dendrons in the other of said dendrimers (B), or the number of dendrons in one of said dendrimers, or both, is different from the number of dendrons in the other of said dendrimers, or both.

Blended dendrimers

Light emitting devices are described which incorporate, as the light emitting element, a dendrimer of which the constituent dendrons include a conjugated dendritic structure comprising aryl and/or heteroaryl groups connected to each other via bonds between sphybridized ring atoms of said aryl or heteroaryl groups.

Asymmetric light-emitting dendrimers having the formulae: (a) CORE-[DENDRITE1]n[DENDRITE2]m and (b) CORE-[DENDRITE]n are disclosed.

Asymmetric dendrimers

The invention provides sensors comprising one or more compounds of formulae (I) and (II):[DENDRON]-CORE-[[X]-[DENDRON]]&#x2003;&#x2003;(I)[DENDRON]-[X]-[DENDRON]&#x2003;&#x2003;(II)wherein CORE, X, DENDRON, DENDRON, m, n, p, q and r are as defined herein. The optical (e.g. luminescent) and electronic properties of the compounds are capable of being altered by exposure to a number of different substances. The invention also provides the use of the compounds disclosed above in the sensing of substances, in particular explosives.

Reactive dendrimers

A compound of formula (I), where x is 3, 2 or 1, y is 0 or 1, nand n, which may be the same or different, are 0 or 1 to 3, X represents a divalent mono- or poly-aromatic and/or heteroaromatic moiety, the or each Y, which may be the same or different if x is 1, represents hydrogen or an optionally substituted hydrocarbon group, Z represents an aromatic group, or an inherently at least partly conjugated dendritic molecular structure comprising one or more aromatic and/or heteroaromatic groups and, optionally, alkenylene groups, connected to each other either directly or via a carbon atom of an alkenylene group, if present, to a ring carbon atom of an (hetero) aromatic group to which more than one at least partly conjugated dendritic chain is attached, said molecular structure being connected to the remainder of the molecule via a ring carbon atom, one or more of the (hetero) aromatic rings of the dendrimers optionally being substituted, Z and/or the remainder of the molecule, excluding any groups Y, being luminescent, with the proviso that when Z represents an aromatic group y must be 1.

Dendrimers

A light emitting device having at least one layer that contains a phosphorescent organometallic dendrimer with a metal cation and two or more coordinating groups as part of its core and wherein at least two of said coordinating groups each have a dendron attached, at least one of which dendrons comprises at least one nitrogen atom which forms a part of an aromatic ring system or is directly bonded to at least two aromatic groups.
