Improved butyl rubber-hydrocarbon resin latex compositions are prepared by emulsifying a solution of butyl rubber and a hydrocarbon resin in a one-step process wherein the emulsifying agent is the sodium salt of the sulfate ester of nonylphenoxypoly(ethyleneoxy) ethanol. The films formed therefrom exhibit improved properties over compositions prepared from blends of latices of butyl rubber and hydrocarbon resins.

Butyl rubber or EPDM elastomer latices having excellent mechanical stability are prepared by emulsifying the elastomer cement (hydrocarbon solution) with water, a water-soluble soap of a fatty acid containing 12 to 24 carbon atoms using an alkali metal or ammonium radical to form the soap and a second stabilizer additive which is an alkali metal, ammonium or amine salt of a long chain alpha olefin polymeric or copolymeric substituted organic aliphatic mono or dicarboxylic acid or anhydride thereof of a number average molecular weight between about 500 and about 3500 and thereafter removing the hydrocarbon solvent therefrom by flashing the same off by steam or vacuum distillation or other suitable solvent separation method.

Novel rubber latices and method of producing same

Synthetic polymer compositions such as polymers and copolymers of ethylene and an alpha-olefin having a tensile strength at yield of less than about 1500 psi, a hardness of less than about 40 units on the Shore D hardness scale, and a tensile strength at 300% elongation of between about 450 to 1200 psi are effective artificial roughage materials when fed to ruminant animals. These synthetic polymer compositions, when ingested by the ruminant, form a loose fibrous mass in the rumen of the animal which enhances rumination. Increasing the rumination results in increasing the consumption of the feed by the animal and thus results in increased production of the animal products.
