This invention relates to light-colored manganese carboxylates and to a process for preparing manganese carboxylates. The manganese carboxylate salts are derived from (a) at least one carboxylic acid containing at least about six carbon atoms and characterized by the Formula (I) ##STR1## wherein R.sup.1, R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 are each independently hydrogen or alkyl groups, and R.sup.4 is an aliphatic hydrocarbylene group or (b) a carboxylic acid mixture comprising at least one carboxylic acid containing at least about six carbon atoms wherein at least about 75% by weight of the carboxylic acids containing at least six carbon atoms in the mixture are characterized by Formula I. Hydrocarbon solutions of such manganese carboxylates are lighter in color and more color stable than hydrocarbon solutions of similar manganese carboxylates wherein the carbon atom alpha to the carboxyl group contains one or two substituents.

Light-colored manganese carboxylates

The present invention relates to a composition which comprises a zirconium salt of at least one organic carboxylic acid and an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal perborate. The compositons are useful in promoting the drying of ink compositions and particularly in printing inks used in the lithographic printing process.

Drier promoter compositions

An improved high-solids coating composition is disclosed containing at least about 65% by weight of non-volatile material comprising at least one curable organic resin and a drier effective amount of at least one hydrocarbon-soluble neodymium salt of an organic carboxylic acid. A method of curing high-solids coating compositions is also disclosed utilizing at least one hydrocarbon-soluble neodymium salt of an organic carboxylic acid.

Neodymium carboxylates as driers in high-solids coating compositions

The present invention relates to a composition which comprises a zirconium salt of at least one organic carboxylic acid and an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal perborate. The compositions are useful in promoting the drying of ink compositions and particularly in printing inks used in the lithographic printing process.

An improved process for making a bismuth carboxylate is disclosed which generally comprises (A) heating an anhydrous reaction mixture comprising a carboxylic acid or anhydride, bismuth metal, and hydrazine to a temperature of from about 80.degree. C. up to, but not including, the temperature of decomposition of any reactant, hydrazine, or the desired bismuth carboxylate, (B) bubbling an oxygen-containing gas through the reaction mixture during (A), and (C) removing water formed during (B) from the reaction mixture. Bismuth carboxylate compositions are also disclosed which contain at least 70 equivalents of a bismuth carboxylate derived from at least one carboxylic acid or anhydride having from about 6 to about 20 carbon atoms, the composition having a viscosity of not more than 1000 centipoise at 25.degree. C.

Process for making bismuth carboxylates

A process for preparing hydrocarbon-soluble transition metal salts of organic carboxylic acids having improved properties wherein the transition metal is one capable of having a multiplicity of oxidation states is described. The process comprises the steps of (a) providing at least one transition metal compound wherein the transition metal is at one of its higher positive oxidation states, (b) treating said transition metal compound with at least one inorganic reducing agent forming an intermediate containing the transition metal in a lower positive oxidation state, and (c) reacting said intermediate with at least one organic carboxylic acid containing at least 5 carbon atoms to form the transition metal salt of said carboxylic acid. The transition metal salts prepared in accordance with the process of the invention are useful in a variety of applications including resins, inks, paints, lubricants and fuels.

Preparation of hydrocarbon-soluble transition metal salts of organic

A process for preparing transition metal salt compositions of organic carboxylic acids having improved properties wherein the transition metal is one capable of having a multiplicity of oxidation states is described. The process comprises the steps of (a) providing at least one transition metal compound wherein the transition metal is at one of its higher positive oxidation states, (b) treating said transition metal compound with at least one reducing agent forming an intermediate containing the transition metal in a lower positive oxidation state, (c) reacting said intermediate with at least one organic carboxylic acid to form the transition metal salt of said carboxylic acid, and (d) mixing said transition metal salt formed in step (c) with (i) at least one antioxidant, or (ii) at least one additional metal salt wherein the additional metal is more electronegative than the transition metal, or (iii) mixtures of (i) and (ii). The transition metal salt compositions prepared in accordance with the process of the invention are useful in a variety of applications including resins, inks, paints, lubricants and fuels.

Preparation of transition metal salt compositions of organic carboxylic

Metallo-organic compositions soluble in oils and hydrocarbon solvents, of a high transitional metal content and highly overbased character, are prepared from sources of transitional metals (or of transitional in conjunction with nontransitional metals) reacted with mixed organic acids comprising at least one monocarboxylic acid and a second acid, either a sulfonic acid or a different molecular weight monocarboxylic acid. Formation of the complexes requires the use of excesses of metal over acids, and the use of an oxygen-supplying material such as air, regardless of whether the metal source be a free metal, an oxide or a hydroxide. Alkoxyalkanols or glycols may be used in addition to the required acids. These compositions comprise (1) a polynuclear core of a normally insoluble metal oxide or hydroxide which is crystalline by X-ray and electron diffraction observation, with metal hydroxyl carboxylate groups (and when present, sulfonate or alkoxyalkanol or glycol groups) ionically and hydrogen bonded to the core element atoms, and additional acid groups having an unbound association with a core and its bonded groups; (2) ultimate particles having structure with minimum average undissociated molecular weight of about 10.sup.4 ; and (3) a ratio of total moles of metal to total moles of organic acid moieties being greater than 1 to 1.
