An improved method is provided for preparing an insect-active assembly which can provide insect repellency, insecticidal action, or both and which is adapted to be directly affixed to the garment worn by a person. The assembly is comprised of a polymeric body which contains an insect-active composition, as a volatile plasticizer, which, over time, migrates from the polymeric body to provide the desired degree of insect-active action. The improvement consists of preparing the assembly at low temperatures thus preventing losses of the insect-active component to the environment, during processing under conditions employed in the prior art. A key element of this improved process is the use of a thermoplastic latex in place of thermoplastic resins or polymers used in earlier versions of assembly preparation. The thermoplastic latices, which have been plasticized with the insect-active composition, can readily be dried at low temperatures, to form the assembly.

Process for preparation of an insect-active assembly

An insect-active assembly which can provide insect repellency, insecticidal action, or both, and which is adapted to be directly affixed to the garment worn by a person is provided. The assembly comprises a polymeric body which contains an insect-active composition, as a volatile plasticizer, which, over time, migrates from the polymeric body to provide the desired degree of insect-active action. The insect-active assembly can be affixed directly to the garment of a person either by being configured to fit over or be affixed to a portion a the person's garment, (e.g., as a hatband) or by having separate means provided to affix it to the garment. Such separate means for affixing the polymeric body to the garment include pressure-sensitive adhesive coatings and hook-and-loop fasteners.

An article comprising: (1) an interpolymer which comprises crosslinked (meth)acrylate, crosslinked styrene-acrylonitrile, and uncrosslinked styrene-acrylonitrile components; and (2) an adherent metallic coating on said interpolymer. The article is useful as a plated component in motor vehicles, for example, as trim, grille work, wheel covers, and the like, or as plated appliance parts or plumbing components.

An internally plasticized vinyl chloride copolymer composition having good low temperature flexibility and tensile properties is disclosed. It consists essentially of from about 45% to about 80%, by weight, vinyl chloride, from about 15% to about 54%, by weight, of a C.sub.2 -C.sub.10 alkyl acrylate, and from about 1% to about 15%, by weight, of one or more C.sub.8 -C.sub.22 dialkyl maleate and/or fumarate. The copolymer is formed using conventional suspension, emulsion, bulk and solution polymerization procedures.

Internally plasticized vinyl chloride copolymer composition

Flame retardant blends having good impact resistance and a high heat deflection temperature which comprise: (1) an interpolymer comprising: (a) crosslinked (meth)acrylate; (b) crosslinked styrene-acrylonitrile; and (c) uncrosslinked styrene-acrylonitrile polymeric components; (2) a chlorinated vinyl chloride polymer; and (3) a vinyl chloride polymer. The blends have utility as an outdoor construction material for the construction industry, for example, for residential siding, gutter systems, shutters and the like. The amount of the interpolymer (1) which is present in the blend predominates over the respective weight amounts of either of the two other components (2) or (3).

There are disclosed fire retardant polyblends comprising thermoplastic polymers intimately admixed with a crosslinked copolymer of a vinyl halide, preferably a crosslinked vinyl chloride copolymer. These fire retardant polyblends may be utilized in a variety of coating, impregnating and especially molding applications wherein it is desired to provide fire retardancy to the resulting end product.

A fire retardant additive comprising particles of a polymer of: 1. at least one halogen-containing alpha, beta-ethylenically unsaturated monomer; 2. at least one bis(hydrocarbyl)vinyl phosphonate having the structure: ##STR1## wherein X is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, halogen, cyano, aryl C.sub.1 -C.sub.18 alkyl, and ##STR2## wherein R and R' are hydrocarbyl and substituted hydrocarbyl groups which can be the same, different or conjoint; and, 3. at least one third comonomer selected from the group consisting of alpha olefins, vinyl esters of carboxylic acids, C.sub.1 -C.sub.20 alkyl esters of acrylic and methacrylic acid, ethylenically unsaturated dicarboxylic acids, the corresponding anhydrides thereof and the C.sub.1 -C.sub.20 mono and dialkyl esters thereof, amides of ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acids and the N-methylol and diacetone derivatives thereof, vinyl aryl compounds, C.sub.1 -C.sub.20 alkyl vinyl ethers, aliphatic dienes and glycidyl esters of acrylic and methacrylic acid. The polymers of the present invention are useful as fire retardant additives for coatings, adhesives, binders, impregnants, laminants, paint bases, other polymers and the like.

A fire retardant additive comprising particles of a polymer of: 1. at least one halogen-containing alpha, betaethylenically unsaturated monomer; 2. at least one bis(hydrocarbyl)vinyl phosphonate having the structure: ##STR1## wherein X is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, halogen, cyano, aryl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.18 alkyl and ##STR2## wherein R and R' are hydrocarbyl and substituted hydrocarbyl groups which can be the same, different or conjoint; and, 3. at least one third comonomer selected from the group consisting of alpha olefins, vinyl esters of carboxylic acids, C.sub.1 -C.sub.20 alkyl esters of acrylic and methacrylic acid, ethylenically unsaturated dicarboxylic acids, the corresponding anhydrides thereof and the C.sub.1 -C.sub.20 mono and dialkyl esters thereof, amides of ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acids and the N-methylol and diacetone derivatives thereof, vinyl aryl compounds, C.sub.1 -C.sub.20 alkyl vinyl ethers, aliphatic dienes and glycidyl esters of acrylic and methacrylic acid. The polymers of the present invention are useful as fire retardant additives for coatings, adhesives, binders, impregnants, laminants, paint bases, other polymers and the like.

There is disclosed a process for forming modified polymers of: (1) a bis(hydrocarbyl) vinylphosphonate; (2) optionally, a crosslinking monomer containing two or more ethylenically unsaturated bonds; and (3) optionally, one or more comonomers which contain one ethylenically unsaturated bond. The products formed by this process which contain any of the above mentioned monomers are substantially free of unreacted residual bis(hydrocarbyl) vinylphosphonate. The process comprises the post-addition of a monoethylenically unsaturated monomer, the monomer being selected from the group consisting of the vinyl and vinylidene chlorides and bromides and the C.sub.1 -C.sub.20 dialkyl esters of maleic and fumaric acids, to the polymerization medium containing the vinylphosphonate and any optional monomers after the percent conversion of monomers in the polymerization medium has exceeded about 40%.

Process for forming fire retardant polymers of bis (hydrocarbyl)

Self-extinguishing, thermoplastic polymer compositions are prepared by the intimate admixture of a thermoplastic polymer with a copolymer of a halogen containing ethylenically unsaturated monomer and a phosphorus containing vinyl monomer, particularly a bis(hydrocarbyl)vinylphosphonate. The thus modified thermoplastic polymers display a high degree of flame retardance without any substantial changes in their physical properties including, for example, their clarity and hardness and the resulting compositions may be safely employed in any application requiring their possible exposure to fire or high temperatures.
