Systems and methods for managing communication in an IP network between a server and a probe that does not maintain an IP address by selectively restricting which IP addresses that are identified as active in the network may be borrowed for the probes. Restriction of IP addresses may include a black list to exclude specific IP addresses, a white list from which IP addresses can be drawn or both. This permits control over which IP addresses may be borrowed by probes, reducing false alarms, alerts or other network concerns caused by unexpected IP traffic on a particular IP address in the network.

Selective IP address allocation for probes that do not have assigned IP addresses

The invention relates to time synchronization between network testing elements in distributed network monitoring and testing systems, and provides a method for synchronizing packet timestamps generated by a network probe with a free running clock to a master clock connected at a different location of the network. In one implementation, the probe eavesdrops on a PTP message exchange between the master and a remote slave device, recording message reception times according to it free running clock and transmitting relevant timing information to a rest server for determining the probe clock offset and updating the probe packet timestamps.

Time synchronization in distributed network testing equipment

Echo plugs are plugged into the hands-free jacks of wireless telephones to facilitate testing. One echo plug has a pin and a circuit. The pin is physically compatible with the hands-free jack of a wireless telephone. The pin has a speaker connection and a microphone connection. The circuit couples the speaker connection to the microphone connection. In operation, this echo plug receives a signal from the speaker connection of the hands-free jack and transfers the signal to the microphone connection of the hands-free jack. Another echo plug has two pins and a circuit. The pins are physically compatible with the hands-free jack of a wireless telephone. The first pin has a speaker connection, and the second pin has a microphone connection. The circuit couples the speaker connection of the first pin to the microphone connection of the second pin. In operation, this echo plug receives a signal from the speaker connection of a hands-free jack in a first wireless telephone and transfers the signal to the microphone connection of a hands-free jack in a second wireless telephone.

Echo plug for a wireless telephone

An echo plug is plugged into a hands-free jack of a wireless telephone for testing purposes. A test signal is transmitted from a test system to the wireless telephone over a test call. In the echo plug, the test signal is looped back from a speaker connection to a microphone connection of the hands-free jack. The test signal is transmitted from the wireless telephone to the test system over the test call. In other embodiments, an echo plug is used to loop a test signal from a speaker connection of a first wireless telephone to a microphone connection of a second wireless telephone.
