In response to failure of an application that initiated updates to a group of operational system resources without the updates being successfully committed, for each physically inconsistent operational system resource that was left in a non-fully functional data indexing and access state as a result of the failure of the application, a portion of available pending updates are performed to change the respective physically inconsistent operational system resource to a partially backed out operational system resource with a fully functional data indexing and access state. Remaining available pending updates are ignored for the respective partially backed out operational system resource after the respective fully functional data indexing and access state is achieved to expedite system restart.

In response to failure of an application that initiated updates to a group of operational system resources without the updates being successfully committed, available non-committed pending update operations are ignored for any of the group of operational system resources determined to be in a fully functional data indexing and access state. For each physically inconsistent operational system resource that was left in a non-fully functional data indexing and access state as a result of the failure of the application, a portion of available pending updates are performed to change the respective physically inconsistent operational system resource to a partially backed out operational system resource with the fully functional data indexing and access state. Remaining available pending updates are ignored for the respective partially backed out operational system resource after the respective fully functional data indexing and access state is achieved to expedite system restart.

At least one physically inconsistent system resource is identified in response to a failure of an application, where the physically inconsistent system resource was left in a physically inconsistent state as a result of the failure of the application. Available backout operations for any system resources updated by the failed application other than the physically inconsistent system resource are ignored. An automated partial backout of the physically inconsistent system resource is performed. This abstract is not to be considered limiting, since other embodiments may deviate from the features described in this abstract.

Processing requests may be routed between a plurality of runtime environments, based on whether or not program(s) required for completion of the processing requests is/are loaded in a given runtime environment. Cost measures may be used to compare costs of processing a request in a local runtime environment and of processing the request at a non-local runtime environment.

An autonomic method, apparatus, and program product are provided for performance data collection. A start time and a stop time are monitored for an application. The start time is compared with the stop time to determine whether or not the application is meeting a performance target of the application. If the application is not meeting the performance target for the application, performance data collection is autonomically started for the application.

A software application recreation in a computing environment is provided. One embodiment involves analyzing program execution trace data of a software application, and using the analysis results in recreating an executable version of the software application from data traced at significant points during the software application execution. Recreating an executable version of the software application involves creating white space code to simulate the software application execution timing by replacing business logic code of the software application with white space code in the recreated executable version. The recreated executable version of the software application programmatically behaves essentially similarly to the software application.

A method for generating trace information for an exception in a software application, the software application having a traced mode for the generation of trace information and an untraced mode, and the software application further having a retry point as a defined point in a series of instructions for the execution of the software application, the method comprising the steps of: commencing execution of the software application in the untraced mode; on execution of the retry point, recording execution state information for the retry point; on occurrence of an exception at an exception point in the software application, reverting execution to the retry point using the recorded execution state information and switching to the traced mode; and in response to a determination that the exception point is executed in the traced mode, causing execution of the software application to proceed in the untraced mode.

Software tracing

The present invention discloses a solution that defines multiple retry points for a software application which are operable to generate and record trace information only as part of a retry execution in response to an exception. Outside these conditions, the burdens of generating and recording trace information can be avoided. Furthermore, the determination of a preferred one of these retry points can be made to focus the retry execution in a way that only the retry point which generates the most helpful, or informative, trace information is necessarily reverted to in response to an exception.

Resource efficient software tracing for problem diagnosis

The present invention relates to a data processing system and method as well as to a computer program product for realizing such a data processing system and method. Conventionally, access to system resources is controlled within, for example, MQSeries, via security settings or security definition contained within profiles that are used to initialize a data processing system. Typically, each computer program or user has associated access permissions which may, from time to time, be varied by a system administrator. It will be appreciated that to issue on a resource by resource or user by user basis individual changes to access permission would require a significant amount of work. Suitably, the present invention provides a system and method for implementing grouping of security access control for a number of resources or users. Therefore, a single security change request can be used to effect a change of access permissions associated with a number of separate or at least closely coupled resources.

Data processing system and method

Provided are methods, data processing systems, recovery components and computer programs for recovering from storage failures affecting data repositories. At least a part of the recovery processing is performed while the data repositories are able to receive new data and to allow retrieval of such new data. Although new data items may be received into the repository and retrieved therefrom during recovery processing, updates to the data repository which were performed before the failure and which are then restored to the repository by the recovery processing are restored within a recovery unit of work and are inaccessible to processes other than the recovery process until successful completion of the recovery unit of work. The recovery processing ensures that the recovered repository is consistent with the state of the repository at the time of the failure, but is available for addition and retrieval of new data items before completion of the recovery processing.

Disclosed is a method, apparatus, computer program and computer program product for adjusting the frequency at which data is backed up. This involves receiving a target recovery time. A current estimated recovery time is then determined and the current and target times are compared. If it is determined that the current estimated recovery time has reached a predetermined threshold relative to the received target recovery time a new backup should be initiated.

Provided are a computer program, method and system providing simplified administration of groups of computer programs. Command target qualifiers are defined which enable a command to be targeted at either an individual computer program or all members of a group of computer programs. Additionally, scope parameters are defined which enable a command to be targeted at specific computer system resources managed by the computer programs within the group. The computer system resources which are to be accessible to all members of a group have an associated scope parameter defining shared or group access and are held in shared storage, whereas computer system resources to be accessed by only one computer program in the group have a corresponding scope parameter and are held in the local storage of the individual computer program. The invention enables a reduction of the time taken to perform administration and control operations for the group and reduces the risk of inconsistent specification of commands that can arise when a system administrator is required to repeat entry of a command several times.
