An enzymatic synthesis and composition of oligomers and co-oligomers comprised of &#x3b1;-hydroxy carboxylic acids and &#x3b1;-amino acids or peptides is disclosed. In a preferred embodiment, a &#x3b1;-hydroxy carboxylic acid with a specific chiral configuration is linked by an amide linkage to a &#x3b1;-amino acid specific with a specific chiral configuration or linked by an amide linkage to a peptide made up of &#x3b1;-amino acid monomers having identical chiral configurations. Proteolytic enzymes catalyze oligomerization of the &#x3b1;-hydroxy carboxylic acid and &#x3b1;-amino acid. The degree and distribution of oligomerization varies upon the type and concentrations of different reaction mixtures utilized and upon the length of allowed reaction time. The resultant oligomers may be provided to animals such as ruminants as bioavailable amino acid supplements that are resistant to degradation in the rumen and other animals such as swine, poultry and aquatic animals.

Enantioselective oligomerization of &#x3b1;-hydroxy carboxylic acids and &#x3b1;-amino acids

The present invention relates to a solvent for use in extracting oil from an oil bearing material, such as soybeans, with the solvent resulting in the selective extraction of a triglyceride rich oil, which contains 95% or greater triglycerides and non-polar constituents, with the solvent comprised of a hydrocarbon, preferably hexane, and a fluorocarbon, so that the solvent has a viscosity less than 2.6 centipoise and a polarity of less than 0.1. The present invention also relates to a method of using the solvent to extract the triglyceride rich oil, with the method including preferably extracting the oil at a temperature ranging between 35&deg; C. and 55&deg; C., and then preferably cooling resulting miscella to a temperature ranging between 15&deg; C. and 25&deg; C.

An enzymatic synthesis and composition of &agr;-hydroxy carboxylic acid and &agr;-amino acid or peptide co-oligomers is disclosed wherein a residue of the &agr;-hydroxy carboxylic acid is linked to a residue of the &agr;-amino acid or peptide by an amide linkage. Proteolytic enzyme papain catalyzes co-oligomerization of the &agr;-hydroxy carboxylic acid and &agr;-amino acid. The degree and distribution of oligomerization varies upon the type and concentrations of different reaction mixtures utilized and upon the length of allowed reaction time. The resultant oligomers may be provided to ruminants as bioavailable amino acid supplements that are resistant to degradation in the rumen.

Oligomers and oligomeric segments of alpha-hydroxy carboxylic acids and alpha-amino acids

A process is provided for the combustion of ammonium salts of sulfuric acid contained in aqueous media. More particularly, a reductive combustion process which produces a combustion gas containing a divalent sulfur compound having a high concentration of hydrogen sulfide. The process is suitable for combusting ammonium salts of sulfuric acid produced during manufacture of 2-hydroxy-4-methylthiobutanoic acid (HMBA) or methionine. The divalent sulfur compounds in the combustion gas may be further converted to other useful sulfur products and recycled for use in the manufacture of HMBA or methionine.
