A scanner is disclosed. The scanner has only one calibration strip.

In one embodiment, an apparatus includes a transparent platen supported over an inside of a tub, an elongated member situated in the tub in a horizontal plane, a plurality of biasing members operatively connected to the elongated member, and a plurality of gap-maintaining members operable to connect to an image capture module and operatively connected to the platen. The elongated member is movable within a tub in a vertical plane, to movably support an image capture module in a horizontal plane. The biasing members are operable to urge the elongated member towards the platen. The gap-maintaining members are operable to maintain a constant distance between platen and an image capture module.

An imaging device illumination system comprises first and second elongate light guides configured to emit light toward an object to be imaged, each of the first and second light guides having an input window at one end thereof for receiving light from a light source and an end face at an opposite end thereof, wherein the input window of the first light guide is disposed proximate to the end face of the second light guide.

A representative embodiment provides for an imaging apparatus including an output tray supported by the imaging apparatus and configured to receive sheet media from a first source and a second source, wherein the first source and the second source are respectively supported by the imaging apparatus. Optionally, the imaging apparatus also includes a detector configured to provide a signal in response to a predetermined accumulation of sheet media from the first source and the second source within the output tray. Another embodiment provides a method of receiving a first sheet media and a second sheet media within a common output tray, including routing the first sheet media from an imaging device into the output tray using a diverter device, and routing the second sheet media from the imaging device into a sheet handling device and then into the output tray using the diverter device.

Multifunction automatic document feeder (ADF) switch

A representative embodiment provides for an automatic document feeder apparatus configured for use in conjunction with an imaging device, and includes a feed guide supported in spaced overlying relation to a scan window of the imaging device. The automatic document feeder further includes a first document guide and a second document guide. The first and second document guides are supported in spaced relation to each other and are configured to guide a sheet media between the feed guide and the scan window. In use, the sheet media is the only element present between the scan window and the feed guide. Another representative embodiment provides for a method of automatically feeding documents, including guiding a sheet media into a gap that is defined by a scan window and a feed guide, and guiding the sheet media out of the gap.

Automatic document feeder

A method for scanning successive images including the steps of scanning a first image bearing media employing a top to bottom scan direction and scanning a second image bearing media employing a bottom to top scan direction.

Bi-directional flatbed scanning and automatic document feed

A single plate flatbed scanner utilizing a single sensor to detect both opening of a lid covering the plate and the leading edge of an automatically fed document. The flatbed scanner includes a contact glass plate defining a flatbed scanning area where a document to be scanned may be manually positioned. An automatic document feeder (ADF) scan window where ADF-fed documents are scanned is defined within the flatbed scanning area. An image sensor is maintained at a fixed position in the ADF scan window while scanning ADF-fed documents. To scan a manually fed document, the image sensor moves under the flatbed scanning area so as to scan an image of the document. Since the ADF scan window and the flatbed scanning area both are defined in the same area of the contact glass plate, a document inadvertently left on the contact glass blocks the ADF scan window and prevents the scanning of an ADF fed document. A single sensor is utilized to detect the opening of the ADF which uncovers the contact glass to allow manual placement of a document. Detecting the opening of the glass plate cover is used to determine whether or not a document has been left on the glass plate after scanning. The same sensor is also utilized to detect the leading edge of an ADF fed document to initiate the scanning process at the precise time the document reaches the ADF scan window.

An apparatus and method for calibrating a scanner connected to a document feeder are provided. In one embodiment, the apparatus includes a calibration strip attached to a rotatable wheel assembly disposed within the document feeder. A cam is provided to rotate the wheel assembly and expose the calibration strip to the field of view of a head assembly of the scanner for calibration. The cam is configured to then rotate the wheel assembly in the opposite direction, so that the calibration strip is no longer exposed to the head assembly. A cleaning blade may be provided to wipe the calibration strip as it is moved to its non-exposed position.
