A gasket and method for detecting the status of an installed gasket is disclosed, wherein the gasket comprises a series of protruding projections which vary from a visually detectable, defined direction when installed improperly. This invention has particular utility in manufacturing operations where improper gasket installation is difficult to detect during assembly, particularly in the automotive heat exchanger industry.

This invention is to an improved method for reducing crevice corrosion in assembly joints of aluminum fluid handling devices, the improvement comprising, providing a series of spaced ribs at the assembly joint configured to intermittently resist engagement of components along an elongated assembly crevice sufficient to segment the crevice into a plurality of minor assembly crevices dimensioned to permit substantial mixing of fluid within the minor crevices with fluid being handled by the device. The invention has particular utility in automotive heat exchangers wherein crevices at joints where polymeric tanks are assembled to aluminum metal headers are susceptible to crevice corrsion.

An automotive condenser is disclosed as having vertically upstanding first and second headers communicating with inlet and outlet connections, respectively, and generally horizontally disposed tubes connected into such headers, wherein the second header is dimensioned to permit refrigerant gas to separate from refrigerant liquid to provide an upper volume of refrigerant gas and a lower volume of refrigerant liquid. The condenser may be provided with at least one horizontally extending subcooling tube placing the lower volume in flow communication with the outlet.

An improved automotive condenser and method for its production is disclosed, having particular application in cooling utilities wherein resistance to high internal fluid pressures is required. The condenser comprises elongated hollow energy exchange structures extending between header tanks, the hollow structures being formed from opposing elongated plates, undulating in cross-section to form a plurality of longitudinally extending opposing crests and valleys, wherein the opposing valleys are crossed, at a maximum distance between points of crossing valleys of no greater than about 0.2 inches, and said crossing valleys are joined at substantially all crossing points defining longitudinally extending hollow passages between the connected valleys.

Automotive condenser

A single inlet/outlet-tank U-shaped tube heat exchanger is disclosed comprising a tank having a header plate and a plurality of U-shaped tubes whose legs extend through and terminate with an open end at one side of the header plate. A first group of the tubes is arranged so that the two open ends of each of these tubes are located in one and the other of two outboard rows extending longitudinally of the header plate. A second and remaining group of the tubes is arranged so that the return bends of these tubes criss-cross those of alternate tubes in the first group and have their open leg ends all located in a third and inboard row extending between the two outboard rows. A partition in the tank cooperates with the header plate to define an inlet chamber and an outlet chamber in the tank open respectively to the open tube ends in one and the other of the two outboard rows and also to alternate ones of the open tube ends in the inboard row whereby each of the tubes is connected to effect two-pass flow between said chambers.

Single inlet/outlet-tank U-shaped tube heat exchanger

A rapid heat recuperative heat exchanger particularly adapted for use with large gas turbine engines, including a heat exchanger core which is composed of a plurality of spaced plate members. The core is supported within a skeleton framework by hanger members, the lower ends of which are slidably attached to horizontal control rods which extend through aligned openings in the core plates and which guide movement of the plates in an axial direction to the rods due to thermal expansion. Pressurized air is introduced to the core by inlet and outlet fittings on the end of the core which are of significantly greater thickness than the plate members. It is undesirable to join active heat exchange members of widely varying masses and differing cross-sections. Therefore, the end plate of the core is made of material having the same thickness as the inlet and outlet fittings. Progressing from the relatively thick end plate, the plates are gradually decreased in thickness until a desired plate dimension is achieved.
