To solve the problems of compressor wheel blade flow separation causing surge type noises when an exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) duct introduces into the compressor exhaust gases to be returned to the engine, the exhaust gas is fed into an annular volume, defined between inner and outer walls or an annular transition cavity shaped as a radially expanded, axially flattened cylindrical space in the compressor inlet, so that the generally unidirectional radial flow from an EGR duct is re-directed and organized as it is turned from generally radial to generally axial, merging with the general inlet flow and presenting the compressor wheel with airflow of 'circumferentially uniform' flow velocity.

Compressor recirculation into annular volume

A waste heat recovery system for recovering rejected heat of an internal combustion engine includes a turbine expander. The turbine expander outputs power based on a working fluid and includes a turbine blade that is rotatable by the working fluid, a shaft that is coupled to and rotatable by the turbine blade and extends along a longitudinal axis, and a nozzle assembly for directing the working fluid to the turbine blade for rotating the turbine blade. The nozzle assembly includes a nozzle housing disposed about the shaft and adjacent the turbine blade, and a nozzle for accelerating the working fluid. The nozzle component defines a nozzle throat having a geometrical configuration. The waste heat recovery system further includes a passive control coupled to the nozzle component for directing the working fluid.

A number of variations may include a combustion engine tailpipe exhaust circuit defining an exhaust stream and a waste heat recovery system constructed and arranged to recover thermal energy from at least one of a tailpipe exhaust circuit, exhaust stream, charge air cooler, exhaust gas recirculation fluid stream, or coolant stream. The waste heat recovery system may include an expander assembly that may include a first pump, an expander, an evaporator, and a condenser. A second pump driven by the waste heat recovery system may be in fluid communication with the tailpipe exhaust circuit and exhaust stream and may be constructed and arranged to reduce exhaust pressure in the tailpipe exhaust circuit and exhaust stream. A third pump may be in fluid communication with an exhaust gas recirculation fluid stream and which is constructed and arranged to pump the exhaust gas recirculation fluid stream within the exhaust gas recirculation system.

To solve the problems of compressor wheel blade flow separation causing surge type noises when a compressor return or recirculation valve is opened or closed, recirculation airflow from a compressor recirculation valve is fed into an annular volume, defined between inner and outer walls or shaped as a radially expanded, axially flattened cylindrical space in the compressor inlet, so that the generally unidirectional radial flow from the compressor recirculation valve is re-directed and organized as it is turned from generally radial to generally axial, merging with the general inlet flow and presenting the compressor wheel with airflow of'circumferentially uniform' flow velocity.

Turbocharger turbine wheels are designed to accelerate rapidly and to rotate at very high RPM. A turbine wheel is provided with improved low cycle fatigue resistance. The wheel can be balanced by conventional methods.

To solve the problems of compressor wheel blade flow separation causing surge type noises when a compressor return or recirculation valve is opened or closed, bypass airflow from a compressor recirculation valve is fed into an annular volume, defined between inner and outer walls or shaped as a radially expanded, axially flattened cylindrical space in the compressor inlet, so that the generally unidirectional radial flow from the compressor recirculation valve is re-directed and organized as it is turned from generally radial to generally axial, merging with the general inlet flow and presenting the compressor wheel with airflow of 'circumferentially uniform' flow velocity.

The flow path of exhaust gas to the turbine wheel () of a twin volute turbocharger is influenced by the shape and size of the nozzle formed by the shape () of the divider wall () and the shape of the flow passage determined by the walls () of the turbine housing. By moving the walls () toward, or away from the divider wall, the flow of exhaust gas through the nozzle, to the turbine wheel () can be modulated, which thus modulates the turbocharger boost pressure. The invention also applies to single volute turbines.

Simplified variable geometry turbocharger with variable nozzle

A direction changing flow duct, for example, a compressor inlet duct () for a turbocharger compressor cover, wherein the direction of flow is made to change abruptly in a short distance. The direction changing segment is designed to provide a balanced output, optimize air flow, minimize pressure drop, and maintain compressor efficiency. This can be accomplished by providing a bulge () extending radially inwards into a first duct segment, outward bulges perpendicular to the inward bulge, for promoting flow attachment along the walls of the duct.

A turbocharger with a high pressure (HP) and low pressure (LP) stage, designed such that swirl in a conduit providing fluid communication between the LP compressor outlet and the HP compressor inlet is received by the second stage compressor counter to the direction of rotation of the second stage compressor wheel. This is achieved without requiring vanes such as inlet guide vanes, and thus is highly efficient as well as free of blockage and excitation.

Coupling turbochargers for passive pre-swirl counter-rotation

A restraint system () for a vaned diffuser () of a turbocharger () or other fluid boosting device is provided that can reduce or eliminate losses. The system () uses a structure to provide both a pressure load on the vaned diffuser () and a seal for the vaned diffuser (). The structure can be a fluoroelastomer O-ring (). The O-ring () can be positioned at least partially in a channel () formed in at least one of the diffuser ring ('), the compressor housing () and the center housing ().
