The process of generating regular elements in a CAD drawing is accelerated by providing a CAD designer with graphical user interface (GUI) tools to generate regular elements for a CAD drawing interactively, dynamically, and in real-time. The GUI tools allow the CAD designer to preview the regular elements that he or she will be adding to the CAD drawing and modify the number of regular elements to be added interactively and in real-time.

Embodiments of the invention provide a CAD application that allows users to establish, maintain, and synchronize project standards for style definitions and display settings across multiple drawing files that are part of a design project. The CAD application also allows users to specify how changes to a project standard should be synchronized across the drawing files associated with a given design project. A synchronization setting may be manual, semi-automatic or automatic.

A method, apparatus, and article of manufacture provide the ability to define a project in a computer graphics program. A project file is defined with general information regarding the project. A folder structure for the project is defined where one or more project drawing files are organized into various folders by drawing file type. Embodiments of the invention allow users to generate and maintain space objects in a computer-aided design model representing regions bounded by a set of drawing elements included in the model. The space object contains the geometry of such a bounded region and may be used to calculate values such as area and volume associated with the region. Additionally, each space object may be associated with the set of drawing elements bounding the region represented by the space object such that any changes to one of the associated bounding elements causes the geometry of the space object to be updated automatically to reflect these changes. Areas and volumes calculated from the space object geometry may conform to established standards regarding the calculation of gross, net and useable areas of a building or other structure.

A method, apparatus, and article of manufacture provide the ability to specify and maintain a 'location' for an object in a drawing program. A drawing is obtained in a drawing program. One or more objects are obtained in the drawing program. In this regard, one or more of the is a collection of one or more graphical elements. For at least one of the objects, an automatic location property is defined. A value for the location property is obtained from property data of another object, area, or space where the object is 'located' (which is based on the location property).

A reordering tool for sequentially reordering data values assigned to graphical objects in a CAD model is described. The reordering tool can be a software application or a tool included in a software application. The reordering tool can have one or more graphical user interfaces configured to receive input from a user and present information to a user prior to reordering data values of the objects.

A method, apparatus, and article of manufacture provide the ability to display and use object manipulators in a computer graphics program. In some embodiments, an object manipulator (i.e., a button object manipulator or traditional object manipulator) is displayed on a graphics object and activated. In response to the activation, a property of the graphics object is directly modified. Various forms and properties of the object manipulator provide additional capabilities that may assist the user in the graphics program.
