A digital telephone answering device having speakerphone capability allows a recorded message to be played back and heard by the far-end party as well as over the local speakerphone by the near-end party during speakerphone operation as if it were a normal receive signal. Moreover, normal speakerphone conversation is possible during this conversational playback mode allowing the far-end party and/or near-end party to break-in over the played back pre-recorded message as desired and be heard by the other party. Both message and conversation signals are preferably (but not necessarily) at similar levels. Also, the message playback at the near end is preferably (but not necessarily) subject to the same speakerphone digital volume control as that received at the far end.

A frequency hopping spread spectrum cordless telephone system which arranges a swap table. The method and apparatus scans the electromagnetic interference energy content of the frequencies listed in the swap table, for example, when the base unit and hand-held unit are not in use. A controller thereafter arranges the frequencies in the swap table according to their respective electromagnetic interference energy content. During normal operation, upon detection of a degraded active or hop frequency, the controller selects the swap frequency with the lowest electromagnetic interference energy content, which preferably is in the first position in the swap table, to replace the degraded hop frequency.

A method and apparatus for transferring convenience feature data (e.g., speed dial numbers, etc.) from one telephone to another local telephone within the same home or small office. In particular, the telephone includes a memory located within a corded or cordless telephone configured for storing data, and a transfer module configured to transfer requested data between the memory and a target device in response to a transfer request. The corded telephone utilizes a DTMF generator/receiver, a demodulation/modulation module, or a Bluetooth module to establish a communication path between the corded telephone and the target device. The cordless telephone utilizes a DTMF generator/receiver, a demodulation/modulation module, a radio frequency (RF) transceiver, or a Bluetooth module to establish a communication path between the cordless telephone and the target device. A transfer request may be a download, upload, or synchronization request between the memory of the corded or cordless telephone and the target device. By providing means to transfer data between corded or cordless telephone and a transfer device, information may be automatically shared locally or remotely between multiple devices. Moreover, telephones with corrupted memories or erased memories may be automatically updated or restored.

A call related information detector/receiver system which is capable of downloading call related information received at that device to another call related information detector/receiver system remote from the system which initially received the call related information, back over the telephone line. Thus, a remote user while away from the home or office can receive and synchronize call related information at a system other than the one which initially received the call related information. Thus, a remote user can update a local call related information system and review past callers to their home or business telephone at their leisure. Upon establishment of a telephone call between customer premises equipment respectively associated with the two relevant call related information detector/receiver systems, a remote call related information system will request download of call related information logged from another call related information system using the established telephone call. In the disclosed embodiment, the request signals are encoded with DTMF tones, which the receiving call related information system monitors for. Upon acceptance of a request to transmit logged call related information, previously logged call related information is retrieved from its log, formatted for transmission together with suitable header information such as the identity of the transmitting call related information system, and FSK modulated for transmission back over the telephone line. Preferably, the speaker or earpiece of off-hook customer premises equipment will be muted or suppressed during transmission of the data corresponding to the call related information. The particular call related information transmitted may be particularly or generally requested by the remote call related information system, either by pre-stored commands based on a power up configuration of the requesting call related information system, and/or in response to a direct command input by the remote user using DTMF tones.

An adjunct Type II caller ID/call waiting (CIDCW) receiver unit is provided which has a greatly improved ability to detect tones and other call related information on a telephone line from a central office while the customer premises equipment is in an off-hook condition. The inventive adjunct CIDCW receiver unit is placed in series between the telephone line from the central office and the customer premises equipment, rather than in parallel with the customer premises equipment as in conventional adjunct CIDCW receiver units. A second telephone line interface (TLI) is included in the adjunct CIDCW receiver unit for connection to the customer premises unit to simulate the impedance of the telephone line. The adjunct CIDCW receiver unit has the ability to disconnect, mute or suppress the microphone signal from the customer premises equipment from being included in the signal received by the call related information receiver portion of the adjunct CIDCW receiver unit.

Apparatus and methods for adaptively, reliably, and accurately measuring the frequency of an alerting or other signaling tone. A tone detector measures the frequency of a tone (continuous or pulsed) with a high degree of accuracy (e.g., to within 1 part in 10,000). Two lower order or smaller DFTs measure the energy level in two separate but intersecting frequency ranges. A simple ratio is determined from the relative energy measured from discrete Fourier transforms relating to each of the two separate frequency ranges, and an actual measured frequency is determined.

According to one aspect of the invention, two lines are utilized to selectively forward calls based on caller ID data. Thus, according to one embodiment of the invention, a method of connecting a calling party to a called party includes the steps of a customer premise equipment (CPE) receiving an incoming call from the calling party on a first line, the CPE evaluating caller ID data associated with the incoming call, and the CPE placing an outgoing call to the called party on a second line based on the caller ID data. In another embodiment, a CPE includes a first line, a second line, and a calling unit adapted to place an outgoing call on the second line based on caller ID data associated with an incoming call received on the first line. In yet another embodiment, a method of forwarding a call includes the steps of receiving the call on a first line, selectively calling a forwarding number on a second line based on caller ID data associated with the received call, and coupling the first line to the second line.

Type 2 caller ID/call waiting (CIDCW) customer premises equipment (CPE) is provided which has a greatly improved method of detecting tones indicating the availability of call information regarding an incoming call while the customer premises equipment is in an off-hook condition. A hybrid echo canceler (HEC) algorithm is added to the customer premises equipment (CPE) to suppress the signal from the microphone of the customer premises equipment from being included in the signal analyzed for the presence of tones. Thus, the microphone of the customer premises equipment need not be muted upon detection of the alerting CAS tone sequence in a Caller ID service. The HEC algorithm runs substantially continuously in a preferred embodiment, and may be combined with a conventionally operating HEC which cancels reflections due to the hybrid or telephone line interface.
