An organic electroluminescent (EL) display panel is disclosed which has a protective cover sealed thereon with a radiation-cured perimeter seal. The organic EL display panel is formed on a radiation-transmissive substrate, and includes at least one metallized leader which is in electrical contact with at least one anode electrode or with at least one cathode electrode. The metallized leader has a patterned seal zone which defines radiation-transmissive apertures. A perimeter seal band is formed over the substrate and extends through the patterned seal zone of the metallized leader. A protective cover has a perimeter seal flange which mates with the perimeter seal band. A bead of a radiation-curable resin is in contact with the seal flange and with the display panel at the perimeter seal band. A source of curing radiation is directed to the bead of radiation-curable resin through the substrate and through the patterned seal zone for curing the bead so as to seal the protective cover on the organic EL display panel with an electrically insulative radiation-cured perimeter seal.

An organic electroluminescent (EL) image display panel is disclosed which has a light transmissive electrically insulative support, a plurality of parallel laterally spaced light transmissive anode electrodes disposed over a surface of the light transmissive electrically insulative support, a plurality of laterally spaced electrically insulative pedestal strips formed over the anode electrodes, a set of laterally spaced electrically insulative barriers disposed over corresponding pedestal strips, such that portions of each pedestal strip extend laterally beyond each set of barriers, said barriers projecting upwardly over each of the pedestal strips, an organic EL medium overlying each of said anode electrodes, the support, the upper surfaces of corresponding barriers, and extending beyond each of the barriers, and a plurality of parallel laterally spaced cathode electrodes overlying said organic EL medium.

A driver chip for use in an LED or other multi-element recording printhead includes a plurality of current driver channels. Data for determining recording durations for each of the current driver channels is provided on a data bus. A token bit is shifted through a shift register in association with image data to be latched by registers corresponding to a specific driver channel. The driver chip is operational in different recording resolution modes so that it may be connected to recording arrays of different resolutions. When operational in other than its highest or higher resolution, a by-pass signal is generated causing the token bit to by-pass certain stages of the shift register.

A non-impact printhead having a plurality of driver IC chips and and a plurality of recording elements such as LEDs. Each driver IC chip includes a plurality of current-carrying channels that are operative for carrying current to respective recording elements on the printhead and a control for controlling operation of the driver. The control includes a circuit that provides a test circuit interface which includes (a) a test access port for input of update command signals and clock inputs to the test circuit; (b) a test data input terminal for inputting test data and control data into the chip; (c) a plurality of registers connected to the test data input terminal with at least one of the registers storing control data for controlling operation of the driver; (d) a test data output terminal for outputting test data and control data from the chip to an adjacent chip; and (e) a selector connected to the registers and the test data output terminal for selecting test and control data for output from the test data output terminal.

A method for selective transfer of a color organic layer from a donor layer onto a device having an array of pixels with each pixel formed from color subpixels, includes the steps of providing a substrate having opposing first and second surfaces; forming a light transmissive heat insulating layer over the first surface of the substrate; forming a light absorbing layer over the heat insulating layer; providing the substrate with an array of openings extending from the second surface to the heat insulating layer, the number and positions of the openings corresponding to the number and positions of the color subpixels of the device, and each opening having a size equal to or smaller than the size of the color subpixel. The method also includes providing a transferable color forming organic donor layer formed on the light absorbing layer; positioning the device in contact or close proximity to the donor layer in an oriented relationship between the openings in the substrate and the corresponding color subpixels on the device; and employing a source of radiation for producing sufficient heat at the light absorbing layer over the openings to cause the selective transfer of portions of the transferable color forming organic donor layer to the corresponding color subpixels of the device.

A method for connecting selected bonding pads of a universal current driver IC supporting a maximum resolution, e.g., 600 DPI, with the appropriate bonding pads of the same or a lower resolution LED chip array. The output pads of the current driver IC and the pads of the LED elements of each LED chip array or segment are matched so that wire bonding takes place between the physically closest pads. Consequently, the universal current driver IC may be employed with LED chips or segments of a certain standardized length that contain 96 LED elements for 300 DPI, 128 LED elements for 400 DPI, and 192 LED elements for 600 DPI or the like. The selection algorithm, in picking the physically closest IC current driver pad to be connected to an LED element pad leaves certain stages of the IC driver unconnected.

In an LED printhead or the like, a plurality of LED arrays are arranged in a row. Opposite the LED arrays are driver IC chips providing current in respective current driving channels to respective LEDS. Current to an LED for recording of a pixel will be provided for say a duration related to a multibit image data signal. A data bus is provided for carrying the data signals. The data signals are latched in respective data registers associated with each current driving channel. A token bit shift register is provided for identifying a respective data register for latching of the multibit image data signal presently on the data bus. A direction of shifting of the token bit is determined through automatic self-sensing of the token bit itself as the token bit is moved from a boundary scan register that forms a part of a boundary scan test architecture.

A method for producing a calibrated printhead having a plurality of light-emitting recording elements such as LEDs includes the steps of (a) burning-in the recording elements until a further aging characteristic of the recording elements is in a generally linear range; (b) measuring a light intensity emitted by each recording element after the burning-in in step (a); (c) establishing a target value for additional burning-in of at least those recording elements having measured light intensities above a minimum measured light intensity for a recording element; and (d) respectively providing additional burning-in to those recording elements towards the target value. An apparatus including the calibrated printhead has no data provided to the printhead which is corrected for relative non-uniformity of the recording elements to each other.

An assembly of an LED array of LED elements and lens array provides for improved flattening of the peaks and valleys of the light profile emitted by the array after lensing. The assembly employs the line spread function (LSF) of the lens to determine the positioning of opaque electrodes overlying each LED region. The electrodes then function not only as a means for current injection into the LED, but also to modulate light intensity across the width of the region to aid in properly shaping the LED light output profile to best fit the lens characteristics. The LSF of the lens may also be used to define areas in which to adjust the light-emitting layer or anti-reflection coating thicknesses in directions extending across the LED regions to accentuate or attenuate light output intensity. Preferably, diffusion of specific sub-regions to different depths within each light-emitting region of an LED element and/or the adjustment of anti-reflection/coating thicknesses over specific sub-regions of each LED element are employed.
