A circuit breaker having at least one capacitor assembly connected in parallel across a contact of the circuit breaker. The capacitor assembly can be housed with the contact within a sealed enclosure of the circuit breaker. The enclosure can be configured to house an insulating medium that is configured to reduce or quench an arc(s) that may form at least when the contact of the circuit breaker is displaced from a closed position to an open position. The capacitor assembly, which includes a transient recovery voltage (TRV) capacitor, can be configured to delay terminal fault and short line fault TRV and the rate of rise of the initial TRV (ITRV) that can appear across the open contact of the circuit breaker.

An enclosure for a circuit breaker that includes a particle trap that is integrated into at least one foot of the enclosure. The enclosure can be configured to house a circuit interrupter and seal a dielectric insulating medium within an interior region of the enclosure. The particle trap can include an opening that extends through at least an inner side of a wall of the enclosure and into an adjacent foot such that the opening is in fluid communication with the interior region of the enclosure. Additionally, the opening of the particle trap can radially extend within both the wall of the enclosure and the foot between a first side and a second side of the particle trap.

An enclosure of a circuit breaker that includes an interior region and a pass-through. The interior region can be sized to house a circuit interrupter and a dielectric insulating medium. The pass-through can include a pathway having a first open end and a second open end, the first and second open ends being in direct fluid communication with each other through the pathway. The first and second open ends can be secured to the enclosure such that the pass-through is integral to the enclosure, such as, for example, being part of a monolithic structure or constructed to form a unitary body. Additionally, the pathway may not be in direct fluid communication with the interior region of the enclosure. Further, the pass-through can be offset from, or extend directly into, the interior region of the enclosure.

Disclosed are example embodiments of a dead tank circuit breaker for protecting electrical components against electrical surges and other voltage anomalies such as transient overvoltages. The circuit breaker includes: one or more vacuum interrupters; a current bypass circuit electrically coupled to the one or more vacuum interrupters; a dead tank encasing and hermetically sealing the one or more vacuum interrupters and the current bypass circuit, wherein the dead tank is pressurized with a non-SF6 gas; and a controllable mechanism coupled to the one or more vacuum interrupters and to the current bypass circuit. The controllable mechanism is configured to actuate the one or more vacuum interrupters and the current bypass circuit to open or close a main circuit path such that any pre-strike arcing occurs on the current bypass circuit instead of the one or more vacuum interrupters.

A circuit breaker system has an SF6 tank having a wall, and an SF6 heating system. The SF6 heating system includes a heater disposed externally of the tank, and a radiator disposed on the wall inside the SF6 tank. The radiator is thermally coupled to the heater via the wall. The heating system is constructed to conduct heat from the heater through the wall to the radiator. The radiator is constructed to radiate the heat to the SF6 in the tank. A circuit breaker system has an SF6 tank having a wall, and a particle trap. The particle trap has a spar extending radially inward from the wall and a wing extending outward from each side of the spar. Each wing is spaced apart from the wall and forms a region having no electric field at the bottom of the tank adjacent the spar.

A sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) insulated circuit breaker system has a tank constructed to hold a quantity of SF6; a circuit breaker having contacts insulated by the SF6; a heater operative to supply heat to the SF6; and a thermal capacitor in conductive engagement with the tank, and operative to store heat energy and constructed to conduct the heat energy to the SF6 in the tank. A thermal energy storage system for a sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) insulated circuit breaker system having a tank storing a quantity of SF6 includes a thermal capacitor operative to store heat energy and constructed to engage the tank and conduct the heat energy to the SF6 in the tank.

A sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) insulated circuit breaker system having a controller coupled to at least two different sensor devices and operative to control a heat output of an SF6 heater based on signals from the sensor devices. An SF6 insulated circuit breaker system includes a controller coupled to a circuit breaker position indicator and operative to control an SF6 heater based on a signal from the contact position indicator sensor. An SF6 insulated circuit breaker system has a controller coupled to an SF6 density monitor and operative to control an SF6 heater based on a signal from the SF6 density monitor.

A tank for a circuit breaker has a body defining an interior volume and having opposing ends. An flange is at each end of the body with the flanges defining a central longitudinal axis of the body. The body has an internal surface defining a top portion of the tank disposed substantially above the axis and defining a bottom portion of the tank disposed substantially below the axis. The top portion is spaced from the axis as defined by at least a first radius from the axis. The bottom portion is spaced from the axis as defined by at least a second radius from axis. The second radius is greater than the first radius so as to reduce an electric field intensity on the bottom portion of the body and thus reduce effects of foreign particles within the interior volume, regardless of phase rotation.

A circuit breaker, or transformer, or insulated bus for use with AC voltages greater than 30 kilovolts and AC currents greater than 400 amperes includes an elongated bushing made from electrically insulating material and having a first end adapted to be coupled to a main enclosure of the circuit breaker, or transformer, or insulated bus. An elongated extruded radiator has a first end coupled to the second end of the bushing and a second end. A terminal pad is coupled to the second end of the extruded radiator. An electrical conductor is disposed in internal cavities of the bushing and the extruded radiator in spaced relation to internal walls of the bushing and the extruded radiator that define the internal cavities. One end of the conductor is electrically connected to the terminal pad.
