A method and apparatus for providing simultaneous enhancement of transmission loss and absorption coefficient using activated cavities is presented. A layer of material is provided, and a backing plate having a plurality of cavities on the top surface of said backing plate, is disposed adjacent a top surface of said layer of material. A screen is disposed along the top surface of said cavities on said backing plate and at least one cavity includes an actuator disposed within the cavity and a control system receiving a signal from the microphone and receiving a signal from the accelerometer and providing a drive signal to the actuator to provide an acoustic output to provide simultaneous insertion loss and absorption which serves to minimize a linear combination of the signal from the microphone and the signal from the accelerometer.

Simultaneous enhancement of transmission loss and absorption coefficient using activated cavities

A method and apparatus of performing power line sensing is presented. The method and apparatus includes a three-axial vector magnetic sensor for detecting a magnetic field radiated from a power line. An active isolation system is used to determine the effects of noise and other magnetic fields on the three-axial vector magnetic sensor. Power line status information is then determined from data received from the three-axial vector magnetic sensor and the active isolation system.

Remote passive detection of failed power lines and estimation of power line current and power flow

A compliant stator motor is disclosed. In one implementation, the motor () includes a rotor (), a stator () having main and auxiliary windings, an outer motor case (), and a group of isolators () positioned between the stator () and outer motor case () to enhance forces applied to the foundation () due to excitation of the auxiliary windings. In another implementation, the motor () includes a rotor (), a stator () including main and auxiliary windings, linear bearings () configured to constrain a motion of the stator () to an axial direction, and isolators () connected to the stator () and configured to enhance axial forces applied to the foundation due to excitation of the auxiliary windings.

There is disclosed multiple embodiments of a predictive active compensation system for dampening vibration in an optimum manner employing feedback control wherein stiffness of dampening material is adjusted on a continuous and dynamic basis to ensure that relative displacement between vibrating machine or object and its foundation does not exceed particular limits including limits preventing impact between object and foundation. In these disclosed systems and methodologies of the present invention the foundation may also be subjected to movement. Further disclosed are computer plots of mathematical models on which embodiments of the present invention are based, thereby demonstrating efficacy of the present invention.

Predictive active compensation systems

An active control device for reducing high-speed impulsive (&ldquo;HSI&rdquo;) and blade vortex interaction (&ldquo;BVI&rdquo;) noise in a rotor aircraft, such as a helicopter, is disclosed. The system comprises a plurality of rotor blades extending radially in spaced relationship from a central hub, each of the blades having spaced apart upper and lower surfaces, an interior volume between the surfaces, and leading and trailing edges at the respective joined edges of the upper and lower surfaces. Air intake passages are disposed on the surfaces of each blade proximate the leading edge to controllably admit air into the interior volume; and air output passages are disposed on the surfaces of each blade proximate the trailing edge and the outer edge tip to controllably expel air from the interior volume of the blade. Admitting and expelling of air into and out of the interior volume of each blade is controlled in accordance with a determined condition of that blade. When the presence of BVI or HSI noise, or any condition giving rise to such noise, is sensed, the admittance and expulsion of air is activated to minimize the noise.

Use of flow injection and extraction to control blade vortex interaction and high speed impulsive noise in helicopters

A vibration reduction system including a base, a disturbance generating device, and at least one active mount connecting the base and disturbance generating device for imparting a force at a point on the base to minimize the transmission of the disturbance to the base. The active mount includes a passive element on which the disturbance generating device is supported, an actuator for imparting a force on at least the base, a sensor located on the base for sensing the total force imparted by the active mount at the selected point and generating a corresponding signal, and a controller for generating an input signal corresponding to the force to be imparted by the actuator on at least the base and sending the input signal to the actuator. The controller regulates an impedance error as a function of the signal received from the sensor to generate the input signal. The force imparted by the active mount at the selected point on the base substantially counteracts the disturbance applied to the base by the disturbance generating device. The active mount further includes a second sensor located on the base for detecting a velocity or acceleration of the base at the point on the base. The invention also includes a method of reducing vibrations of a base caused by a disturbance generating device mounted on the base via an active mount.

The present invention is noise attenuation system and related method for suppressing noise generated by a noise source, such as a jet engine, contained in a housing. An impedance device is positioned in the housing to attenuate the amplitude of sound waves generated by the noise source propagating in one direction and to create a reflected sound wave. The reflected sound wave is out of phase with the sound waves propagating from the noise source away from the impedance device. The reflected sound wave destructively interferes with this sound wave to attenuate the amplitude.

Sound attenuation system and related method

The system disclosed herein controls the vibratory energy radiated from a structure subject to excitation from an outside disturbance by enforcing a preselected mechanical impedance upon at least one point in the structure using an electromechanical transducer connected to the structure at that point. The transducer is energized in response to the output of an adjustable or adaptable filter. Sensors provide signals representing the force applied by the transducer and the resultant velocity. The force and velocity signals are applied as inputs to the adaptable filter through circuit means including a component providing an electrical analog of the preselected mechanical impedance. The adaptable filter is then controlled to reduce the amplitude of the input signal applied to the filter, i.e. the error between the measured mechanical impedance and the desired impedance.
