The invention relates to polyvinyl alcohol-modified, rosin-based, resin-fortified emulsion polymer compositions having improved properties which are useful in formulating gravure and flexographic printing inks. Additionally, the invention relates to the method of preparing these emulsion polymer compositions.

Polyvinyl alcohol-modified rosin-based emulsion polymers

The invention is water-based printing inks and coatings formulated with stable low viscosity grind bases made from modified rosin grinding resins. These grinding resins are produced via the fusion esterification of fortified rosin with hydroxyacrylic resins and various polyols. Suitable hydroxyacrylic resins are prepared by copolymerizing an hydroxyalkylacrylate or methacrylate with alkyl acrylates, cycloalkyl acrylates, methacrylates, or styrene. These hydroxyacrylic resins can be made to contain a wide range of molecular weights and hydroxyl contents, thereby permitting formulation of a wide variety of soluble grinding resins and printing inks.

Rosin-based resin-fortified emulsion polymers

The invention is soluble rosin grinding resins capable of being employed over a wide range of pH values to produce stable low viscosity grind bases for water-based printing inks and coatings. The grinding resins are produced via the fusion esterification of fortified rosin with hydroxyacrylic resins and various polyols. Suitable hydroxyacrylic resins are prepared by copolymerizing an hydroxyalkylacrylate or methacrylate with alkyl acrylates, cycloalky acrylates, methacrylates, or styrene. These hydroxyacrylic resins can be made to contain a wide range of molecular weights and hydroxyl contents, thereby permitting formulation of a wide variety of soluble grinding resins.

Hydroxyacrylic modified grinding resins for water-based coatings

The invention is ink pigment grinding resins for water-based printing inks which are produced by the esterification of fortified rosin with styrene-allyl alcohol copolymer and various polyols. The resulting rosin resin may be employed over a wide range of pH values to produce stable low viscosity grind bases.
