In one or more embodiments, electrical supply systems including Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment (EVSE) are provided. The EVSE includes a communication gateway that provides internet accessibility by a user through an EVSE server. In some embodiments, the EVSE allows communication with other smart devices, and/or communication of status of loads coupled to a load center. The user or the utility service provider can perform, through the EVSE server, energy management and home automation tasks using this communication gateway of the EVSE and may send control signals to smart devices through the EVSE. This EVSE may also provide a protection mechanism for smart devices coupled to the load center in case of emergencies like brown-outs or power surges on the electric grid. Methods of operating the system and EVSE are provided, as are other aspects.

EVSE-based energy automation, management, and protection systems and methods

An electrical panel meter system may include a controller and a plurality of meter modules. Each meter module may be configured to monitor, read, and store at the meter module electrical data related to electrical power provided to a respective branch circuit of the electrical panel meter system. The controller may be configured to issue a read command simultaneously to each meter module and to store a timestamp indicative of the issuance of the read command. The controller may also be configured to issue a send command sequentially to each meter module to transmit its stored electrical data reading. The controller may further be configured to append the stored timestamp to each received electrical data reading to create a timestamped electrical data reading suitable for use in power quality analyzes. Methods of timestamping electrical data sampled in an electrical panel meter system are also provided, as are other aspects.

Certain exemplary embodiments can provide a system, which can comprise a set of electrical energy monitoring devices. Each of the set of electrical energy monitoring devices can be adapted to be mounted in a circuit breaker panel substantially adjacent to a corresponding circuit breaker. The system can comprise an energy monitoring master controller adapted to be communicatively coupled to each of the set of electrical energy monitoring devices.

A method for measuring characteristics of a power line signal having a fundamental frequency is provided. The method includes estimating the fundamental frequency of the power line signal, and generating a sampling clock that is substantially synchronized to the estimated fundamental power line frequency. The power line signal is sampled with the substantially synchronized sampling clock to generate data samples that include one or more substantially complete cycles of the power line signal. The data samples are processed to detect zero crossings of the power line signal, and the detected zero crossings are used to calculate an r.m.s. voltage of the power line signal measured over one full cycle, commencing at a zero crossing, and refreshed each half-cycle. Other aspects are also provided.

Apparatus and methods for power quality measurement

The present invention provides methods, apparatus, and systems of measuring frequency. The invention includes sampling a first number of full cycles of a signal at a rate based on a nominal frequency of the signal; converting the samples to digital samples; processing the digital samples to identify a first pair of digital samples with each one disposed on either side of a first zero-crossing and a second pair of digital samples with each one disposed on either side of a last full cycle zero-crossing; interpolating the first pair of digital samples and the second pair of digital samples to determine a position of the first and last zero-crossings relative to each other in time; and calculating a fundamental frequency of the signal based on the first number of full cycles sampled and the relative position of the first and last zero-crossings. Numerous additional aspects are disclosed.

Methods and apparatus for measuring the fundamental frequency of a line signal

A system and method are provided for the collaborative charging of electric vehicles. The collaborative charging manages the disbursement of power from a neighborhood transformer so as to increase the efficiency of electric vehicle charging at the residences without significantly altering the existing power distribution and residential infrastructures. Time-flexible loads are shed in order to efficiently allocate energy distribution without compromising the comfort or security of the user. The identities of individual residential power demands can be concealed to protect the user's privacy or made available to further optimize power allocation. The power allocation negotiation may be performed in a residential local demand management client separate from the residential charging station.

An electrical distribution system for selectively connecting an electrical power source to load devices comprises a plurality of panels. Each panel comprises a plurality of load control devices each for connection in a branch circuit to a load device, and an input/output (I/O) controller operatively connected to each of the load control devices for controlling operation of the load control devices. The I/O controller includes a communication port. A programmed system controller is provided for commanding operation of the I/O controllers and includes a communication port. A bus operatively connects the I/O controller communication ports to the system controller communication port. The programmed system controller implements a communication program using a protocol establishing communications on the bus, the protocol including a layer stack translating between logical messages and physical messages for communication on the bus, wherein each layer generates its own thread and communicates to other layers via objects passed in queues to adjacent layers.

An electrical distribution system is provided for selectively connecting an electrical power source to load devices, comprising a panelboard having load circuit positions. A remote operated device is mountable in the panelboard comprising a load control device, a programmed controller for operating the load control device and a communication circuit. An input/output (I/O) controller is mounted in the panelboard for controlling operation of the remote operated device, the I/O controller comprising a programmed controller, and a communication circuit for communication with the remote operated device communication circuit. The communication circuits are adapted to communicate using an asynchronous communication protocol comprising transfer of data in two directions.

An electrical distribution system is provided for selectively connecting an electrical power source to load devices comprising a plurality of panelboards each having a plurality of load circuit positions. A plurality of pairs of circuit breakers and switching devices are each mounted in one of the load circuit positions. Each pair is electrically connected between an electrical power source and a load device for selectively delivering electrical power to load devices. An I/O controller is mounted in the panelboard for controlling operation of the switching devices. The I/O controller includes a communication circuit. A system controller is connected to each I/O controller communication circuit and comprises a programmed controller for commanding operation of the I/O controllers.

A system, method, and device for monitoring an AC induction motor are disclosed. The exemplary system provides the architecture of an intelligent motor controller. On one hand, the controller has self-commission and adaptive tuning capability and can provide smooth start and stop for motor driven systems. On the other hand, the controller can provide fault detection, power metering, and history data logging, to ensure motor operates under optimal conditions. The exemplary system may have one or more sensors for monitoring characteristics of the AC induction motor and producing one or more inputs from the characteristics.

A power distribution apparatus for distributing electrical power includes circuit breaker modules and remote operated devices mounted separately in a panel. The devices may be relays, circuit breakers, meters, dimmers or other devices for controlling a circuit. An I/O controller board is connected to the remote operated devices and controls those devices through a data rail. A control module may interface with the I/O controller board and may also interface with other I/O controller boards and with one or more networks. A serial communications line connects the I/O interface board with a number of remote operated devices. A separate select line runs from each remote operated device to the I/O controller board. To operate a particular device, the I/O controller board asserts the select line of that device, causing the device to listen for messages on the serial line. The relay executes commands contained in a message only of the select line for that device is asserted.
