Systems and methods for actualizing simulated scarfing and patching for repair of composite laminates. A virtual environment is provided that enables engineers to optimize a repair design and provide the most robust repair solution that meets structural requirements, while minimizing the material removal and the impact to the composite structure. An optimization algorithm is configured to adjust contour offsets for pad-up plies and adjust scarf taper ratios in any direction to reduce the amount of material removed or avoid underlying structures. Scarf repair designs are subsequently transmitted to repair technicians for manual scarfing via printed templates or automated/robotic scarfing using converted computer-readable code. The technology also provides digital data for automated repair ply cutting.

Systems and methods for actualizing simulated scarfs and patches for repair of composite laminates

A method of applying a coating to at least a portion of a surface of a structure using reusable master path rules. The surface of the structure is identified to form surface data. A framework for the surface of the structure is generated using the surface data. The framework comprises a plurality of points. Reusable master path rules are created for a master path connecting the plurality of points. The master path is a continuous line representing a universal route for applying coatings to the surface. The coating is applied to the at least a portion of the surface of the structure using the reusable master path rules.

A computer implemented method for generating a section cut in a model of a part. A location on the part is identified. An axis system is created at the location in the model of the part, wherein the axis system has an axis that is normal to a surface at the location in the model of the part. Section cuts intersecting the surface and plies below the surface are created. A plurality of sampling points on the surface is identified based on the section cuts. Core sampling is preformed using the plurality of sampling points to generate sampled data.

Method and apparatus for composite part data extraction

A computer implemented method, apparatus, and computer usable program code for providing ply lay-up data for a composite part. A designation of a location is received for the composite part in a three dimensional object from a requester. A three dimensional model is opened in which the composite part is located. The ply lay-up data is extracted for a section within the composite part within the three dimensional model to form extracted ply lay-up data for the section. An output file is created containing a two dimensional drawing for the section with the ply lay-up data identifying a ply stacking sequence, an orientation of each ply in the ply stacking sequence, and a material for the each ply in the ply stacking sequence. The output file is returned to the requester.

A computer implemented method, apparatus, and computer usable program code for providing ply lay-up data for a composite part. The output file is returned to the requester.

A composite part program generator includes a computer-aided design (CAD) system interface, a path generator, a course head manager, a post-processor and a machine simulator. The composite part program generator produces composite part programs for use on a multihead composite material application machine, such as a composite tape lamination machine or an automated fiber placement (AFP) machine, to manufacture a complex composite parts, including relatively flat, contoured, or generally cylindrical composite parts. This programming method can reduce the labor and time required to produce a composite part program for a multihead composite material application machine by an order of magnitude with respect to manual or existing automated programming methods.
