This invention relates to carbon materials, such as a fullerene molecule or a curved carbon nanostructure, that are functionalized by addition chemistry performed on surface C&#x2014;C double bond.

Halogenated compounds are prepared by ring opening reactions of highly fluorinated cyclopropanes with chlorine, bromine, iodine, or mixtures thereof at temperatures over 100.degree. C. A novel compound, which is one type of compound produced, is a highly fluorinated and halogenated ether and other novel compounds are starting materials or products. The products of the process are useful as chain transfer agents for certain free radical polymerizations, and as chemical intermediates in the preparation of various products such as surfactants and textile surface treatments.

Preparation of halogenated compounds

Cyclofluoralkylated fullerene compounds are prepared by reacting the fullerenes with a fluoroalkene as exemplified by tetrafluoroethylene or perfluoromethyl vinyl ether under thermolysis conditions as exemplified by temperatures of 200.degree. C., pressure and a halocarbon solvent, the products being useful as lubricants or additive thereto as well as in cooling systems, adhesives and polymers.

Cyclofluoroalkylated fullerene compounds

Mixtures of cyclofluoroalkylated fullerenes are provided by the thermal 2+2 cycloaddition of fluoroalkenes to a solution or slurry of a fullerene. The cyclofluoroalkylated fullerene mixtures are useful as lubricants or additives to lubricants; in fluorocarbon and/or chlorofluorocarbon based cooling systems; in adhesives for fluorocarbon based polymers and in gas separation membranes.

This invention provides a mixture of fluoroalkylated fullerene compounds, preferably perfluoroalkylated fullerene compounds, comprising the formula, (C.sub.60+2n)R.sup.1.sub.m R.sup.2.sub.b Z.sub.y, wherein R.sup.1 is a branched or straight chain hydrocarbon or aromatic hydrocarbon of from 1 to about 100 carbon atoms; R.sup.2 is a branched or straight chain fluoroalkyl group of from 1 to about 100 carbon atoms; Z is one or more selected from H, F and Cl; n is an integer from 0 to about 470; m is an integer from 0 to about 24+n; b is an integer from 1 to about 24+n; and y is an integer from 0 to about 35+n.

A fluoropolymer composition useful in the manufacture of cured fluoropolymer articles can be made by mixing a specified copolymer with an organic peroxide such as a dialkyl peroxide, and preferably also adding a divalent metal oxide and/or hydroxide and a suitable coagent such as triallyl isocyanurate. This composition contains a copolymer obtained by copolymerizing a small amount (e.g. about 0.5-3 mole %) of a bromine-containing olefin with certain fluorine-containing compounds.

Fluoropolymer composition

A novel fluoropolymer can be made by copolymerizing a small amount (e.g. about 0.5-3 mole %) of bromotrifluoroethylene or bromotetrafluorobutene with certain combinations of monomers comprising selected fluorine-containing compounds. A fluoropolymer composition useful in the manufacture of cured fluoropolymer articles can be made by mixing the resulting fluoropolymer or a closely related fluoropolymer with an organic peroxide such as a dialkyl peroxide, and preferably also adding a divalent metal oxide and/or hydroxide and a suitable coagent such as triallyl isocyanurate.
