A built-in-test capability is provided for determining the integrity of an optical fiber connecting: (a) an optical firing unit having a primary light source emitting a first wavelength, a test light source emitting a second wavelength different from the first wavelength, a mechanism both for coupling light from the light sources to the optical fiber and also for coupling the return light to a detector; and (b) an optically-initiated device which is coupled to a second end of the optical fiber. The apparatus includes a photoluminescent material disposed at a junction of the optically-initiated device and the second end of the optical fiber. In test mode, this photoluminescent material is exposed to the test light source, which results in photoluminescence at a third wavelength. The photoluminescent light travels through the optical fiber to the detector, and when detected indicates optical fiber continuity. The present system can also measure the temperature at the distal end of the optical fiber by detecting changes in the peak wavelength or amplitude associated with the third wavelength as a function of temperature. When the system is used to initiate ordnance, the detector can also detect the initial flash of light produced by the ordnance to provide confirmation that the ordnance has ignited.

Photoluminescence built-in-test for optical systems

An improved transducer array includes a two-dimensional array of multilayer actuators, capable of producing very high displacement with low input voltage, integrally packaged with conditioning electronics. Preferred microcomposite actuators use multiple layers of stacked electrostrictive ceramics and conductive materials. The actuators are aligned in a two-dimensional array and can be integrated with the conditioning electronics in a variety of packaging systems. A preferred packaging system is a flexible high density interconnected multi-chip module which has the integrated circuit chips disposed in a substrate, interconnection layers disposed thereon and the multilayer composite actuators disposed on the surface of the interconnection structure. The actuators in this packaged array may be optionally addressed individually or in blocks, depending on the application intended.

Integrated composite acoustic transducer array

The apparatus includes a photoluminescent material disposed at a junction of the optically initiated device and the optical-fiber-second-end. This photoluminescence material photoluminesces at a third wavelength (when exposed to the test light source), and the light travels through the optical fiber and, when detected indicates optical fiber continuity.

Photoluminescence built-in-test for optically initiated systems

Total internal light spatial light modulation apparatus includes a light source for projecting infrared light; a prism for reflecting the projected light from an internal surface therein; and an array of pixel posts made of electrostrictive material and positioned proximate a back face of the internal surface for selectively eliminating pixel areas of reflection of the projected light to form an image thereby. A multiplexer is provided to select a set of pixel posts to be electrically charged which corresponds with the image, and electrical contacts are formed on each pixel post no permit electrical charging of each selected pixel post. Method of fabricating the pixel post array, wherein each row of the pixel post array is formed as a monolithic structure, includes the steps of providing a slab of alternate layers of ferroelectric and electrically-conductive material; vapor-depositing electrical contacts on the slabs in electrical communication with the layers of electrically-conductive material at locations corresponding to the pixel posts to be fabricated; securing the slabs together in a front-to-back relationship with divider plates positioned therebetween; and cross-cutting a number of grooves through the slabs to define the pixel posts of each row.

Total internal reflection spatial light modulation apparatus and method

A method of and apparatus for high speed modulation of a laser by controlling stimulated emission in the direction transverse main output. Because gain in either direction is derived from the same pool of excited carriers, lasing in the transverse direction depletes gain available in the longitudinal direction. The control of the forward output is achieved using either (1) transverse transmission regions depending on the applied bias or (2) transverse absorbing regions.
