A compressor includes a particularly shaped discharge valve which extends into the discharge port. The shaped valve includes a convex portion on the seat side of the valve which extends downwardly into the discharge port. The shaped valve furthermore includes a concave portion on the seat side of the valve that begins where the convex portion ends. The beginning of the concave portion on the seat side of the valve is located so as to prevent flow separation of the refrigerant when flowing along the convex portion of the valve as it leaves the compression chamber of the compressor.

A notch is provided in the motor end bearing of a rotary compressor in the region of the discharge port. The notch enhances the flow by smoothing the flow path and guiding the flow so as to impinge upon the discharge valve in a glancing manner and reduces the noise from the valve and valve stop and from the turbulent flow through the discharge port. The notch is located along the axis of the discharge valve and on the side of the valve port on which the valve is pivoted.

An oil groove is formed in the shaft journal facing the upper bearing land of a high side rotary compressor and is located relative to the eccentric such that the groove is not located in a high loading region of the shaft journal.

Motor bearing lubrication in rotary compressors

Lubrication deficiencies related to the use of lubricants in HFC refrigeration compressors can be mitigated by providing a diamond-like-carbon coating on a member subject to wear due to lubrication deficiencies. Specifically, the tip of the vane of a rotary compressor is coated with a diamond-like-carbon coating made up of alternating layers of tungsten carbide and a lubricious material 0.5 to 5.0 microns thick.

A relieved portion is provided in the motor end bearing of a rotary compressor in the region of the discharge port. The relief is in the nature of a chamfer or the like and enhances the flow by smoothing the flow path. The relief is limited to the portion of the motor end bearing overlying the cylinder bore so as to limit its contribution to the clearance volume.

Lubrication deficiencies related to the use of synthetic lubricants such as POE oils in refrigeration compressors can be mitigated by providing a diamond-like-carbon coating on a member subject to wear due to lubrication deficiencies. Specifically, the tip of the vane of a rotary compressor is coated with a diamond-like-carbon coating made up of alternating layers of tungsten carbide and a lubricious material 0.5 to 5.0 microns thick.

The end ring(s) and counterweight(s) attached to the rotor of a hermetic compressor are located within a cover which isolates them from the interior of the compressor. The cover may be fixed or it may rotate as a unit with the rotor, end ring and counterweight. In each embodiment the asymmetric counterweight is prevented from acting as a fan with respect to the interior of the shell and is thereby prevented from producing a pressure gradient tending to act on the sump and cause a higher oil circulation rate to the refrigeration system.

Reciprocation of the vane of a rolling piston compressor can produce a pumping action which draws oil from the sump and discharges it into the gas exiting from the discharge chamber. By providing a restricted communication between the sump and the spring cavity, the amount of oil being pumped can be reduced to a level just sufficient for lubricating the vane.
