Liquid detergent compositions comprise 25-60% by weight of solids suspended in a liquid phase comprising at least 20% by weight of a condensation product of ethylene oxide with a mono- or di- or tri- hydroxy alkane having 1 to 4 carbon atoms having an average molecular weight in the range 150 to 600. The solids comprise a builder and optionally a bleach, and the liquid phase preferably comprises a surfactant.

Detergent compositions

Linear aldehydes having 7-21 carbon atoms are separated from mixtures (which may contain alcohols and/or branched aldehydes) by converting them into solid adducts with C.sub.2 to C.sub.12 linear alkane diols. The adducts are then separated and decomposed. The adducts are themselves novel compounds.

Aldehyde adducts

A synthetic resin is produced by polymerizing with a Friedel-Crafts catalyst a C.sub.5 stream containing butadiene which has been preheated to a temperature of at least 160.degree. C. for a period of up to 5 hours.

Synthetic resins derived from petroleum

A composition comprising a rubber and a resin in which the resin has been produced by the copolymerization of a C.sub.5 hydrocarbon stream and a butene, said C.sub.5 hydrocarbon stream containing at least 10% by weight, based on the combined amounts of said C.sub.5 hydrocarbon stream and butene, of dicyclopentadiene or a codimer of cyclopentadiene with a diene selected from the group consisting of butadiene, isoprene and piperylene; said C.sub.5 hydrocarbon stream containing not more than 10% by weight of 2-methylbutene-2; and said resin having a molecular weight of 500 to 40,000 and containing 10 to 90% by weight butene.

Rubber composition

A novel polymer is produced by the ring opening polymerization of a 5-substituted-norbornene-2 in which the 5-substituent is a nitrile group or a nitrile group pendant that position through an alkylene radical, e.g., poly(5-cyanonorbornene-2).
