A system and method are provided for reducing the energy consumed by a pump jack electric motor by reducing the supply voltage to the motor when the motor would be generating energy in open loop mode. By substantially eliminating the energy generation mode, the braking action of the utility grid in limiting the acceleration of the motor and system that would otherwise occur is substantially removed. The motor and system will speed up, allowing the natural kinetic energy of the cyclic motion to perform part of the pumping action. In particular, when the energy consumption for the electric motor connected with the device having a rotating or reciprocating mass goes to zero, the line voltage to the motor is switched off, causing the frequency of the voltage across the motor terminals to increase. When the period of the voltage across the motor terminals returns to substantially the same as the period of the line voltage, the line voltage is switched on or reapplied to the motor.

Energy saving system and method for devices with rotating or reciprocating masses

A system and method are provided for saving energy for an electric motor having periodic load variations by reducing the supply voltage to the motor during an open loop mode. The motor and system will speed up, allowing the natural kinetic energy of the cyclic motion to perform part of the pumping action. A closed loop controller computes information from the observed phase angle between the voltage and current supplied to the motor. By reducing the supply voltage to the motor, the observed phase angle may be reduced to a target phase angle value. By allowing some current flow, primarily of a reactive nature, an observable feedback parameter may be used in the closed loop control system as an indication of the load condition, to which the closed loop motor controller may react, supplying power when needed, such as in the energy consumption mode.

A combination of a radio receiver with a detachable controller is presented. The radio receiver sends either reduced or enhanced metadata about received programming to the controller. A connection from the controller to the receiver carries commands and carries only the reduced set of metadata, such as tuned channel and tuned channel name, from the radio receiver back to the controller. The controller is authorized by the radio receiver sending a radio identifier to the controller, determination of an authentication code at the controller and communication of the determined authentication code back to the radio receiver for validation. Upon validation, an enhanced set of metadata, including song title and artist, is sent to the controller. The enhanced metadata, the reduced metadata, or both, may be encrypted. Such authorization processing is periodically performed by the radio receiver.

The electric motor may be effectively turned off, but without completely cutting the power to the motor. During both the energy consumption mode and the period that open loop energy generation would be occurring, the closed loop motor controller may reduce the observed phase angle to a target phase angle by reducing the supply voltage. Any further reduction in the observed phase angle below the target phase angle may be interpreted as an increase in motor load, to which the motor controller may respond by increasing the supply voltage to the motor until the target phase angle is once again reached.

A motor controller () and method for maximizing the energy savings in an AC induction motor () at every load wherein the motor is calibrated at two or more load points to establish a control line (), which is then programmed into a non-volatile memory () of the motor controller. A DSP-based closed-loop motor controller observes the motor parameters of the motor such as firing angle/duty cycles (), voltage (), current () and phase angles to arrive at a minimum voltage necessary to operate the motor at any load along the control line. The motor controller performs closed-loop control to keep the motor running at a computed target control point, such that maximum energy savings are realized by reducing voltage through pulse width modulation.

An anti-theft surveillance system capable of detecting the presence of tags affixed to merchandise. The tags contain a diode attached to two dipole elements. When the tag receives alow frequency signal and a high frequency signal, it will emit two side bands. The system includes alow frequency transmitter, a high frequency transmitter, and a receiver. The two transmitters place alow frequency signal and a high frequency signal in proximity to the guarded area (typically a store doorway). When a tag is near the doorway, the receiver will receive the upper side band and lower side band. The receiver reduces the frequency of the upper and lower side band signals to form an intermediate frequency upper side band and an intermediate frequency lower side band. These two intermediate frequency signals are then fed into two separate detector circuits. One circuit detects the presence of the intermediate frequency upper side band and the other circuit detects the presence of the intermediate frequency lower side band. Only if both side bands are detected is an alarm created.

A digital servo control system for disk drives is an &ldquo;embedded&rdquo; system&mdash;one in which servo control information is embedded on the same disk surface as the user data. In contrast to known embedded-servo systems in which a space-consuming series of many dibit pairs is present, the present system provides only a single dibit pair in a fractional positional error (PES ) area. Thus, the disk drive's read head encounters only a single dibit pair per sample period (or per data sector), thus saving valuable disk space that may be used for user data. Various pre-processing methods may be provided so as to pre-process the measurement derived from the single dibit pair per sample period (or data sector), so as to compensate for non-ideal characteristics of the dibit measurement. The system thus provides an accurate and robust servo control system, while sacrificing a minimum amount of valuable disk space to the servo information field.

In a servo controller for controlling the position of a read/write head of a disk drive, a calibrated controller is dedicated to fixed-distance seeks, especially for 'single-track seeks' (seeks to an immediately-adjacent track). The controller is first calibrated during a calibration period that precedes an operational period. The purpose of the calibration period is to determine an optimum combination of 'calibrated values' for the fixed-distance seeks. 'Calibrated values' may include: acceleration pulse magnitude, acceleration pulse duration, deceleration pulse magnitude, and deceleration pulse duration. During the calibration period, various combinations of possible calibrated values are tested during a series of test seeks of the predetermined fixed distance. During each test seek conducted in the calibration period, a cost function is calculated, and the combination of possible calibrated values with the best cost function is chosen for use as the optimum combination of calibrated values during the subsequent operational period. If, during the operational period, the cost function exceeds the cost function of the optimum combination of calibrated values by a predetermined amount, the controller is re-calibrated to maintain optimum performance of the disk drive during fixed-distance seeks.

In a digital servo control system especially suitable for use in disk drives, a sample integrity tester is provided. Sample measurements, indicating the position of a disk drive's read/write head relative to tracks of information on a recording medium, are subject to error due to noise. The sample integrity tester 2410, 2420, 2430 effectively filters out noise-corrupted measurements and thus prevents clearly erroneous measurements from contaminating calculations performed within the servo controller's control loop. If a measured position signal falls outside a given window (indicating a possible spurious position value has been read), an observer's predicted value is used rather than the spurious value. Using the predicted value allows the loop to operate in a 'freewheel' (open-loop) mode. A preferred implementation of the sample integrity tester involves a coarse window that is static, and a fine window that changes dynamically based on an effort signal.

A first data block is received (1004) and stored (1006) in a memory (402) in a manner that defines memory locations for each of the N words, thereby deinterleaving the first data block. A next data block is received by processing (1008) at least a portion of the N words stored previously in the memory, thereby providing free memory locations, and thereafter receiving (1012) new data including at least a portion of a next data group of the next data block. The new data is stored (1014) in at least a portion of the free memory locations, and processing continues until the next data block has been received and stored in entirety. The memory locations are then redefined (1018) for the N words, thereby deinterleaving the next data block.
