This invention embodies a system and a method for charging electric vehicles comprising, a solar canopy over selected parking spaces, and control equipment and software to maximize the use of solar energy, minimize demand charges and allow for ancillary services to the grid. The capacity of the solar canopy is such that it is capable of providing the energy needed to operate the vehicle both for commuting and for all other uses except for trips over 2-300 miles, as provided by the control software. The system can include features for allowing access only to authorized users, for measuring the amount of energy used by each, and for monthly billing.

Solar-energized electric vehicle charging

This invention enables Electric Vehicle Service Equipments to control external electrical loads, such as water heaters. The parallel electric energy demand of the external load augments the remotely controllable energy demand for charging the vehicle creating a larger controllable demand than for charging the vehicle only. This larger demand is useful in responding to requests for ancillary service from the grid and can increase the revenue for regulation services.

Electric vehicle service equipment adapter module to control added loads

This invention has as its objective provision of a method and apparatus to enable the batteries of Electric Vehicles (EV)s to level the electric demand in buildings to reduce demand charges based on instantaneous demand for electric power. This load leveling is done by connecting the EV to the building electrical system by its conventional Alternating Current (AC) recharging connection, and by an additional Direct Current (DC) path supporting intermittent loads. In this way the EV battery stands between the AC energy source and the intermittent load and reduces the electric power drawn from the grid to a constant minimum level, thereby minimizing demand charges.

This invention consists of an apparatus to interface an electric vehicle battery with a solar photovoltaic system and a method of using the apparatus to provide back up power during grid outages and ancillary service revenue from the grid. This invention is a DC-coupled, non grid-tied system comprising a solar panel, or an array of panels, a storage battery, a battery charger, an inverter, and optionally, a connection to an electric vehicle via both the regular AC charging connection and a DC connection. Unlike conventional grid-tied solar systems there is no possibility of solar or battery energy being fed back to the grid by virtue of the one-directional flow of energy through the battery chargers. The system can utilize all of the energy produced by the solar panels to provide power to critical household loads by storing electric energy in the storage battery. In the event of a grid outage, the system maintains power to the critical loads to the limits of the capacity of the batteries and the inverter, supplemented by whatever solar power is available. The energy available in an outage can be supplemented by using the main propulsion battery of an electric vehicle. The DC connection to the electric vehicle can be either indirect through the low voltage accessory system of the vehicle or direct through a high voltage quick charge port on the vehicle.
