A heretofore waste gas stream containing nitrogen is used in the manufacture of carbon black.

Recovery of carbon black

Combustion gases containing free oxygen and a carbonaceous feed are introduced into a carbon black reactor, with the combustion gases being at a temperature sufficient to pyrolyze the feed hydrocarbon to produce combustion products containing particulate carbon black. The combustion products are cooled by quenching to form a gaseous effluent containing particulate carbon black. The effluent is discharged from the reactor to an indirect heat exchange means for further cooling the effluent. Carbon black is introduced into the effluent inlet of the indirect heat exchange means for removing carbon black which has become deposited on surfaces defining the flow path or flow paths for the effluent flowing through the heat exchange means. The effluent after cooling in the indirect heat exchange means is passed to separating means for separating the effluent into a gaseous portion and a particulate carbon black portion. Thereafter, the particulate carbon black portion can be pelleted.

Apparatus and method for producing carbon black

Combustion products containing particulate solids such as carbon black are quenched by indirect heat exchange and the build up of solids deposits on the heat exchange surfaces is minimized or deposits on the heat exchange surfaces are removed by providing a fixed bed of fluidizable particulate solids within the indirect heat exchanger and positioning a shell-tube heat exchanger within the bed of solids with the heat exchange fluid being in the shell side and with the gas stream containing entrained solids such as carbon black passing through the tubes which contain particulate solids. Fluidization of the particulate solids by the gas stream containing carbon black, for example, passing through the tubes cleans or keeps the inner peripheries of the tubes clean.

A process and apparatus for recovering carbon black from hot smoke which comprises passing the smoke through a cyclone separation zone following cooling, then through aggregate filter beds and regeneration of filter beds with clean off-gas which is recycled to the carbon black reaction zone as quench.

A method and apparatus are provided for producing carbon black wherein in a carbon black reactor a first quench of effluent flowing through a quench zone is effected by contact of the effluent with water. The first quench cools the effluent to a temperature sufficiently low to stop pyrolysis. Downstream of the first quench is a secondary quench in which cooled smoke ahead of the filters is contacted with the effluent for secondly cooling the effluent. After the second cooling the effluent flows to an indirect heat exchanger wherein the effluent is again cooled, by indirect contact with a coolant in the heat exchanger, to a temperature sufficiently low to prevent damage to the filter system.

Method for producing carbon black

Broadly, finely divided material or particles which are readily carried in or by a gaseous or vaporous fluid are caused to impinge upon solid polyolefin particles to maintain fluidized during contacting by use of a gaseous or vaporous material carrying said particles. In one embodiment, carbon black reactor smoke at a suitable temperature is employed to fluidize a bed of finely divided polyolefin, e.g., polyethylene, thus producing particles of plastic containing carbon black pigment. In this embodiment, off gas from the fluidized zone, preferably on separation from entrained solids, is burned in a wet pellet dryer in which carbon black from a carbon black reactor effluent is processed. Recovered solids can be returned to the fluidized operation. The carbon black-impregnated polyolefin product is recovered from the fluidized bed.

Sulfur dioxide is removed from a sulfur dioxide-containing gas mixture by contacting the gas mixture with a monoolefin or diolefin.

A non-carcinogenic carbon black is produced by severely aftertreatng a carbon black-containing smoke inside of the carbon black reactor to result in a carbon black with a photelometer of 100% and a pitting degree (nitrogen surface area minus CTAB surface area) of about 7 square meters per gram or more, oxidizing this carbon black and thereafter high temperature drying wet pellets made from this carbon black at a temperature between about 500.degree. and 600.degree. F.

Non-carcinogenic carbon black

A non-carcinogenic normal cure carbon black is produced by severely aftertreating a carbon black-containing smoke to result in a carbon black with a photelometer of 100% and a pitting value of about 15 m.sup.2 /g or more in case of small particle carbon black (CTAB of 120 m.sup.2 /g) and of 0.2 m.sup.2 /g or more in case of large particle carbon black (CTAB of 30 m.sup.2 /g) by contacting the carbon black with an oxidizing agent, by high temperature drying the carbon black at a temperature of about 500 to about 600.degree. F and finally by aftertreating the dried carbon black at a high temperature of about 1,000 to 1,400.degree. F.

Production of non-carcinogenic carbon black

A non-carcinogenic large particle carbon black both produced by severely aftertreating a carbon black-containing smoke to result in a carbon black with a photelometer of 100% and a pitting value (nitrogen surface area minus CTAB surface area) of about 0.2 m.sup.2 /g or more to 7 m.sup.2 /g or more for a carbon black of 30 m.sup.2 /g to 80 m.sup.2 /g CTAB surface area, oxidizing the black as well as by high temperature drying the wet pelleted carbon black at a temperature of about 500.degree. to 600.degree. F. The CTAB surface area of the carbon black is less than 80 m.sup.2 /g and preferably about 30 to 60 m.sup.2 /g.

Production of non-carcinogenic large particle carbon black

A method and apparatus for introducing combustion gases into a carbon black furnace, the method involving the introduction of the combustion gases at variable velocities to affect the structure of the black by affecting the extent of the contact between the hydrocarbon feed and the combustion gases. The apparatus includes means for varying the introduction velocity of the combustion gases.
