A friction plate includes a core plate defining a bore. The core plate includes an interior core surface defining the bore, an exterior core surface radially spaced from the interior core surface, a first clutch face extending between the interior core surface and the exterior core surface and facing a first direction, and a second clutch face extending between the interior core surface and the exterior core surface and facing a second direction opposite the first direction. The friction plate also includes a friction material disposed on at least one of the first and second clutch faces. The core plate also includes a fluid directing portion. A first plate thickness is defined between the first and second clutch faces. A second plate thickness is defined at the fluid directing portion. The second thickness is greater than the first thickness.

Friction plate and clutch assembly including the same

A clutch assembly, a torque converter clutch assembly, and a brake assembly for a vehicle are disclosed. The clutch assembly and the brake assembly may have at least one reaction plate comprising an internal cavity containing a phase change material. The torque converter clutch assembly may have a front cover plate comprising an internal cavity containing a phase change material. The phase change material may be capable of absorbing at least some friction-induced heat generated at a friction interface of the reaction plate or front cover plate when the clutch assembly, the torque converter assembly, or the torque converter assembly is shifted to a closed position, such as when the clutch is activated or when the brakes are applied.

Using phase change materials for temperature management in clutch assemblies, torque converter clutch assemblies, and brake assemblies

A friction plate is provided including ,a core plate, a core plate first friction facing having a first radius and a first height; and a core plate second friction facing having a second radius differing from the first radius and a second height differing from the first height and having a coefficient of friction differing from a coefficient of friction of the first friction facing, wherein both of the facings are formed from an integral base fiber type friction facing material and wherein the difference in coefficients of friction is due to a percentage of a friction modifying saturant in the facings and wherein there is a groove separating the facings.
