A process for the preparation of dicyanobenzenes of the formula ##STR1## in which x denotes hydroxy, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkoxy, nitro, amino, mono- or di-(C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl)amino, phthalimido or a nitrogenous saturated 5-membered or 6-membered heterocyclic radical, which is attached to the phenyl ring via a nitrogen atom in which a xylene of the formula ##STR2## in which x has the meaning stated above, is oxidized at a temperature of from 400.degree. to 500.degree. C. with oxygen in the presence of ammonia and a catalyst.

A process for preparing a compound of the formula I ##STR1## where R.sup.1 to R.sup.4 are each, independently of one another, hydrogen, alkyl, alkoxy, hydroxyl or halogen, comprises reacting a compound of the formula II ##STR2## with a compound of the formula III ##STR3## in the presence of sulfur or a sulfur donor at elevated temperature. Pigment formulations contain a) a finely divided pigment, b) at least one colorant which has at least one external basic group, c) at least one acidic and/or neutral phosphoric ester and d) if required, further assistants conventionally used in such formulations. The formulations are used for pigmenting printing inks and lakes. The printing inks, pastes and lakes produced using the formulations have substantially better flow behavior than the inks and lakes obtained using prior art pigments.
