An integrated access device is automatically configured to conduct packetized voice and data communications between a customer's voice/data equipment and a digital communications switch. For this purpose, the IAD's communication control processor is programmed to perform an automated analysis of the digital communications link and thereby identify communication interface circuits such as DSLAM and voice gateway units, that have been installed by the service provider. It then automatically configures the communication parameters of the IAD for communication compatibility with the communication interface circuits.

Mechanism for automatically configuring integrated access device for use in voice over digital subscriber line circuit

A dual PHY-based integrated access device (IAD) platform employs a highly integrated time division multiplexed (TDM), a synchronous transfer mode (ATM) cell based architecture, to provide enhanced interfacing flexibility for multiple and diverse signaling protocols, effectively reducing the cost and constraints as to choice of host processor used in conventional digital signal processor (DSP)-based IADs. With the signaling transport speed of the dual PHY based path being an order of magnitude greater than that of any of the plurality of communication paths with which the IAD is interfaced, the IAD of the invention provides effectively real time support for different communication requirements, including TDM, ATM, HDLC, and the like.

Dual-PHY based integrated access device

A cascaded signal processing arrangement processes digitally encoded voice samples transported over a time division multiplex (TDM) communication path for application to a processor-controlled digital communication device, in particular an integrated access device. Processed voice samples are packetized in accordance with an encapsulating protocol and transmitted as a packetized voice output stream to a destination receiver device. The arrangement includes an echo canceller coupled to the TDM communication path and performing echo cancellation processing on the digitally encoded voice samples. The echo cancellation-processed voice sample signals are compressed by a data compression operator and applied to a packet encapsulating host processor via the TDM communication path. This obviates the necessity of the host processor having to use data bus cycles to download processed digitized voice samples.

A called telephone number substitution mechanism is incorporated into the call-routing software employed by the microcontroller of a customer premises-installed communication device, through which digitized voice and data services are supplied to a customer site. The number substitution mechanism automatically selectively modifies digits of an original (dialed) telephone number, as necessary, to conform with the connectivity requirements of the communication link serving the destination device, thereby enabling the call to reach the destination device.

A power management system is interfaced with both a local utility power source and a remotely powered span, and monitors the power availability for and requirements of DDS terminal equipment. Upon detecting that local utility power is insufficient to operate the terminal equipment, a power limited converter derives power from the phone line. The span power drawn is limited to a fixed value that prevents the line from collapsing. An auxiliary capacitor stores energy from either local utility power or the span, to provide for periods of extended power operation (including ringing the phone).

An automated telecommunication switch type and protocol detection routine transmits an interrogation message to a telecommunication switch. The contents of the interrogation message are such as to cause the switch to transmit a response message that uniquely identifies only one switch protocol and switch type. Once switch type and protocol have been automatically determined, this information may be coupled with an automated service profile identifier (SPID) detection mechanism to facilitate generation of the requisite SPID(s).

A universal digital communication device includes a first digital communications interface for a first type of digital communication signals (such as basic rate 2B1Q ISDN signals), and a second digital communications interface for a second type of digital communication signals (such as extended range 3B1O ISDN signals) having a digital transport range over a telecommunications network greater than that of the first type of digital communication signals. A processor-controlled multiplexer unit determines which of the two types of digital communication signals is required for providing digital communication connectivity between local and remote communications equipment. It then couples the terminal equipment to the telecommunications network by way the digital communications interface that is capable of interfacing the required digital communication signals with the telecommunication network.

Self-configuring universal communication device for interfacing communication signals having different properties with repeaterless two-wire telephone link

The inability of an ISDN equipment user to properly configure ISDN terminal equipment, even when provided with correctly assigned switch protocol, SPID and LDN parameters by a telephone service provider, is successfully remedied by a SPID/switch protocol detector. Upon being invoked by the user, the routine proceeds to conduct an iterative search of stored SPID formats associated with different central office switch protocols. SPIDs are assembled in accordance with the iteratively accessed SPID formats and directory number information that has been entered by the user. If an attempt to register a SPID is successful, the routine places a test call. If the test call is successful, the SPID and its associated switch protocol will have been identified, and the terminal equipment may place a call.

ISDN terminal equipment-resident mechanism for determining service

An ISDN terminal adapter is capable of providing both digital and analog communication connectivity between a customer's data terminal equipment (DTE) and a digital communication link. The adapter includes a digital (ISDN) communication transceiver for transmitting and receiving digital communication signals on the ISDN link. A first digital communication connector is coupled with the DTE. A second digital communication connector is coupled with the customer's modem. An analog communication connector is coupled with an analog port of the modem. An analog/digital communication interface is coupled between the analog communication connector and the digital communication transceiver. A serial communication exchange processor is coupled with the first and second digital communication connectors and the transceiver. For all-digital (ISDN) connectivity, the processor provides a first communication path, exclusive of the modem, between the first digital communication connector and the transceiver, so that digitally formatted communication may take place between the DTE and the ISDN link. For digital-analog connectivity, the processor provides a second communication path that makes use of the customer's external modem, between the first digital communication connector and the transceiver, for communications between the DTE and the ISDN link.
