The method includes reacting a water soluble oxygenated hydrocarbon in the presence of a catalyst at a temperature, pressure, and weight hour space velocity for a time sufficient to produce a self-separating, three-phase product stream comprising a vapor phase, an organic phase, and an aqueous phase. A portion of the organic phase can be reacted to produce alkanes, alkenes, alcohols, and aromatics.
