In some particular aspects, a wearable audio device includes: at least one electro-acoustic transducer; at least one processor; and memory including instructions executable by the at least one processor, wherein the instructions are configured to apply a first equalization (EQ) setting to first audio provided by a first audio source, the first audio to be played using the at least one electro-acoustic transducer, and apply a second EQ setting different from the first EQ setting to second audio provided by a second audio source, the second audio source being different from the first audio source, the second audio to be played using the at least one electro-acoustic transducer.

An acoustic noise reduction (ANR) headphone described herein has current detection circuitry that detects current consumed by an acoustic driver amplifier as a result of pressure changes due to a tapping of the headphone. Tapping may be performed to change an audio feature or operating mode of the audio system for the headphone. The current detection circuitry senses a characteristic of the current consumed by the acoustic driver amplifier that can be used to determine an occurrence of a tap event. Examples of a characteristic include an amplitude, waveform or duration of the sensed current. Advantageously, the ANR headphones avoid the need for control buttons to initiate the desired changes to the audio feature or operating mode.

In some particular aspects, a wearable audio device includes: an accessory port; at least one processor; and memory including multiple sets of active noise reduction (ANR) configurations (or more generally, multiple profiles), the memory including instructions executable by the at least one processor, where the instructions are configured to: select a first ANR configuration (or more generally, a first profile) upon powering on the wearable audio device, the selection of the first ANR configuration (or first profile) based on an accessory connected to the accessory port, and automatically switch to a second ANR configuration (or more generally, a second profile) in response to a trigger, where the second ANR configuration (or second profile) is different from the first ANR configuration (or first profile).

Various implementations include systems for rendering 3D audio signals for a vehicle operator. In particular implementations, a method of spatializing audio for an audio device worn on a head of an operator includes: receiving audio data and location data, the location data indicating where the audio data should be rendered relative to the vehicle; tracking a head position of the operator of the vehicle; calculating a compensated location of where the audio data should be rendered based on the location data and the head position of the operator of the vehicle; and spatially rendering, using the audio device, the audio data at the compensated location.

In one example, a headphone system includes an earpiece having an interior volume, the earpiece configured to couple to an ear and define an acoustic volume including the interior volume and a volume within the ear, a speaker to provide acoustic energy to the acoustic volume based on a received driver signal, a feedback microphone to detect at least residual noise within the acoustic volume and generate a feedback audio signal indicative of the residual noise, and a control circuit including a sensor interface configured to receive an atmospheric pressure signal, the control circuit coupled to the feedback microphone to receive the feedback audio signal, and the control circuit configured to adjust the driver signal based at least in part on the feedback audio signal and the atmospheric pressure signal.

The technology described in this document can be embodied in a method that includes receiving a first signal representative of audio captured using a microphone in communication with an analog communication module. The method also includes determining that a first feedback signal from the analog communication module includes a sidetone associated with the audio captured by the microphone, and responsive to determining that the first feedback signal includes the sidetone, generating, by one or more processing devices, at least one control signal that affects operations of a digital communication module.

Headphone systems and methods are provided to mitigate the impact of wind on active noise cancellation. At least one headphone system includes an earpiece with a speaker to convert a signal into acoustic energy in an acoustic volume. A microphone is acoustically coupled to an external environment and detects external noise. A control circuit is configured to detect wind and to adjust a feed-forward audio signal from the microphone based on the wind detection.

A stabilized headband includes a headband having two ends with an arcuate section extending between the ends. The headband further includes a pair of pads with each pad having a contoured surface to engage a head in a contact region where the head has a contour that is similar to the contoured surface. The pads may include a compliant member to improve contact with the head. Each pad is pivotably coupled to the headband proximate to one of the ends at a location that is behind the arcuate section when the headband is worn on the head to improve fit, stability and comfort. The arcuate section defines a headband plane which is at a non-zero angle with respect to a vertical plane when the headband is worn on the head.

Described are a headphone and a method for controlling an audio system. The method includes tapping a headphone or head of a user to cause an acoustic pressure change in an ear canal of the user wherein the ear canal is sealed by an acoustic noise reduction (ANR) headphone having an ANR module. A current provided to the ANR module is sensed. A peak value of the sensed current is determined and compared to a value of an adaptive threshold to determine if a tap occurred. If a tap is determined to have occurred, an updated value for the adaptive threshold is determined based on the peak value and at least on prior peak value. A mode of operation of the audio system or an attribute of an audio input signal may be changed in response to the determination of an occurrence of a tap.

Method of controlling an acoustic noise reduction audio system by user taps

Described are a headphone and a method for controlling an audio system. The method includes tapping a headphone, ear or head of a user to cause an acoustic pressure change in an ear canal of the user wherein the ear canal is sealed by an acoustic noise reduction (ANR) headphone having an ANR module. A current that is responsive to a pressure change in the ear canal and provided to the ANR module is sensed. A first peak in the sensed current is determined. A dual tap is determined to have occurred if a second peak in the sensed current is determined during a first time window initiated at the determination of the first peak. The use of dual taps for controlling an audio system can prevent unintended changes to an audio system that may otherwise occur as a result of an accidental or unintended tap for an audio system utilizing single tap control.

The technology described in this document can be embodied in a portable apparatus that includes three connection ports. The first connection port is for connecting the portable apparatus to one or more acoustic transducers, the second connection port is for receiving a connection to a microphone, and the third connection port is for receiving a conductor that connects the portable apparatus to a communication module of an aircraft. The portable apparatus also includes circuitry for interconnecting the first, second, and third connection ports.
